Commercial Description:
Bottle; Pasteurised.
Its initial sweetness is, apparently, "of roasted and vinous notes with a subtle bitter aftertaste". Strong fruitiness, often with "banana notes" standing out, is derived from Old Peculier’s fermentation process.

Pours dark brown to black with acreamy off white head. Lasting with nice lacing. Aroma is toffee, molases and brandy. Flavor is malty and fruity, but fairly light. Finish is dry and bitter, carbonation is lively. Texture is watery.

Sept, 2002: A long standing favourite of mine. Chrissie and I noticed a distinct coffee flavour. Never fails to please. [3.2]
Aug, 2005. Filtered and carbonated bottle. Yes, it tastes very clean and plastic. There is a lacking of that earthy edge you get from living beers. But, having said all that, this is a very pleasant drinking experience. I have a fondness for this in the same way that I have a fondness for Camp coffee. It is pleasantly malty sweet. I do remember this as being something to treasure when it appeared on cask - but even the cask version seems to have gone downhill over the years. Or that may just be familiarity breeding contempt. Anyway - a nice beer to have in the house, but you wouldn’t get it out for the posh guests. [3.1]
Dec, 2006 Blind tasting with Riggwelter, Strong Suffolk and ESB. 1st place. Dark reddish brown colour. Gentle prickly carbonation. No foam. Aroma is of baby poo, vanilla, faint chocolate and strawberry jam. Soft, caramel, red fruits. A finishing tree bark bitterness. Interesting movement from initial soft flavour. Intriguing and interesting flavours. Inviting and changing. A pleasant, compelling and satisfying beer. [3.5]

Bottle. Poured thick and brown with garnet highlights when held to light and little to no head. Aroma features darkly roasted malts and a little bit of a sourdough bread nose. Flavor is sweet and astringent with dried fruits and nice bittering hops evident. Mouthfeel is full and lightly carbonated. Definitely peculier and quite good.

This is a wonderful must try ale. It is a full flavored beer that offers different flavors and aroma’s as it goes down. it has a wonderful dark and redish color. When I had it I was imediately surprised at it’s unique flavor and taste. It offers a good balance of flavor mixed with a subtle sweetness and nutty aroma which is very refreshing and satisfiying.

Black, with hints of red, and a small white head. Aroma is definitely malty in nature. Taste is unlike any beer I’ve had before...is that why it’s "peculier"? Hmm.. Anyhow, I kinda like the interplay of nutty and sour tastes that I get. Sour finish. Is this beer distinctive to northern England? Must be.

A Mes rate: Burnt malty aroma. Virtually opaque deep red brown appearance. Slim head but good lace. Looks very inviting in my St. Feuillien glass. Initially bitter but this one for me is all about the finish. It’s like it doesn’t do much in the mouth but as soon as you swallow all the good stuff comes through. Fruity and red berries which gradually turn bitter and then a lick of sweetness at the end. Most unusual but I really like it.
