Dark and full bodied with underlying subtle cheesy notes which i’d say it would be rather good with. From the beers in the uk that are readily available its one of the best. I asked the guy at the Beer store his opinion. He cracked one of these open, and shared it with me. I thought it was great! It smells good, looks good (if you like brownish/black) it was sweet (fruity?) and I guess what is called earthy. Had what I thought was a slight cigar taste to it. (a good cigar)
Overall it was excellent, so I bought a 6pk! sound67 (203), Offenbach, Germany

It sure is pretty: Pours an impressive dark reddish-brown with big, creamy beige head and generous lacing. Aroma of various red berries, toffee-ish sweetness, roasted malts. Low carbonation - creamy, if a wee bit grainy, mouthfeel. Taste is agreeably malty, balanced by dried fruit and some caramel. Dry, hoppy finish, lasting bitter aftertaste. The most complex of the Theakston brews that I’ve tried, and the one that now strikes as their most characterful and likeable. How impressions change! From the cask at the Beer Festival it struck me as too sweet, the bottled version doesn’t. Nice, complex dark ale. Fratto (728), Arlington, Texas, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 31, 2009 This "yorkshire" ale is a delicious smooth alternative to a scotch ale. It pours very dark brown, almost an oil color. It has a chocolate malty aroma. The delicious malty flavor is very smooth.
