Date: 24/11/2005 Location: Whitelocks, Leeds Notes: Ruby red and rich, with an earthy aroma. Slightly "meaty" on the palate, but not in a bad way, just a yeast characteristic. Finishes with a light hop bitterness.

(RBESG 2007, Cask at The Barony, Edinburgh) Amber/brownish color, small offwhite head. Floral sherry aroma, a bit sourish. Floral, hoppy chocolate flavor, metallic notes. Hoppy finish.

Cask conditioned at The Barony, Edinburgh. Ruby brown colour. Low head. Bit of chocolate, and light sourish in aroma. Lightly oxidized, which gives a faint vinegary touch in flavour, there are also chocolate. Vented far to early?

Cask@GBBF2007. Deep amber colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is caramel, licorace and honey. Flavour is the same along with some wooden hints. Also alcohol (or something) shows as a small burning note.

Dark brown with a small off-white head. Toffee aroma with a hint of rubber. Sweet and slightly roast flavour that could do with some bitterness.

Dark, deep coffee coloured stout-like body with a creamy tan head. Smells of brandy vats and musty grapes. On first tasting it is rich and mellow like a good claret, but falls away the further you get down the pint. It is a bit to heavy and cloying. Having said that there are some lovely warm fine-spirit notes in the finish. Bit to sweet for me, not bitter enough.

A beer with a special place in my heart as it was one of the first ales that just blew me away with its rich flavour when I was still a teenager, ensuring that I travelled the path of real ale during my student days rather than that of fizzy corporate lager! Pours a dark reddish amber with a small head. Good balance, with lots of strong fruit and berry flavours, with sweet, sticky malt flavours holding it all together.
