Cask Near-black brown ale, B.D."H.". A bit sulphury nose, and malt colouring. Rest are probably less coloured malts. Dry, hayish malt nose, with some completely fermented-out molasses or other sugar. Some esters, and dry, tannine-like flavours, especially on the lingual surfaces of the incisors. Medium to will-bodied, dry-out effect (tannines). Pretty complex beer, but just not uplifting enough to be really great.

Cask at the Wellington Arms, Bedford. Dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Sweet malty aroma. Fruity, grainy taste, rounded and warming. Slight bitterness.

Cask condition, handpull at Simple Simon’s, Canterbury. Very dark ruby, no head. Is it supposed to be this sour? The it warms up and this lovely dark fruit flavour comes out. Not huge hop, some dryness on end. Some liquorice and a bit of roasted malt with choc and coffee, but the dark fruits dominate.

cask at Ye Olde Starr Inn York: Looks like a cross between a bitter and a porter. very nice sweet malt aroma with some noticiable hopping. flavor was very full and malty with some licorice and the more carmel I’ve ever tasted in a beer in the finish. Quite nice. medium heavy palate. Cheers

Very enjoyable sweetish malty dark brown and full-bodied pint. I also agree with the afore mentioned caramel, chocolate and licorice and possibly wood too.

Pours almost black with a firm, lacing, creamy but rather small off-white head. Aroma of caramel, liquirice and sweet berries. Taste is a bit vinious with clear chocolate tones and liquirice. Sweet but still lightly bitter.

Cask. Found this rating in an old suit, so writing it up now. Dark ruby, thin light tan head. Nose is late summer fruits mixed with malt mixed with sweetish caramel. Taste is malty with those autumn fruits, toffee and some slight wine taste too. A little touch of hops towards the end gives it a bitterness, finishing with coffee. Nice.
