This, however, is a fabulous old ale. Initial roasted sweetness with an oh so subtle bitter aftertaste. Strong fruitiness in flavor well matched with the old ale aroma. Always a good choice. Full & mallty rich flavour with just the right acidity and sufficient hops. Haven’t had the bottled version, but from a well kept cask it’s a real treat. Superb dark ruby colour with light tan head. Slightly roasted malt aroma with hint of banana from, probably, fuggles hops. Warm, treacly flavour with the sweet undercurrent leading to a bitter finish. Highly recommended, just don’t spend an evening on it as it does far more damage than 5.6% would suggest. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 13, 2004 When bottled it’s an OK old ale with fruty and winey taste. Pretty ordinary. But when on tap it’s a totally different story. Dark ruby with high rocky head; aroma and palate are oaky, grapy, vinous, fruity, bitter and very sour. Not for everyone (cask conditioned at the Commercial Inn, Dunfermline). Hbie (133), Essex, England
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 17, 2004 Cask conditioned at various locations. Excellent full bodied winter ale balanced by hops. The bottled version is nothing like the cask version, as it is sweeter and gassy. Best to try in Northern England in winter by a roaring log fire.

This is a fantastic looking pint. nose is fruity yet not overpowering. Flavour is xmas pudding without too much sweetness. feel is smooth and creamy. Does much get better than this? AND its a great session beer.
