Nose is boozy, malty maple and candy sugar. Flavor is lots of sweetness, malt, maple, vanilla, and whiskey. Boozy from start to finish. Very enjoyable Old Ale. soccer290 (137), Highland Park, Illinois, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 7, 2009 12 oz bottle. Another Bells since they came to town. Pours a brown with hints of red and a finger high off-white head. Smells of caramel, dried fruit, a little citrus, and hints of alcohol. Tastes of caramel (quite potent actually), some sweetness, malt, and a bit of alcohol. Full-bodied feel with a strong taste and bite of alcohol. Overall a good barley wine, not as good as FFF Behemoth, but still quite good. fidelis83 (729), Clinton, Iowa, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 7, 2009 Pours a very murky old bronze with a 3 finger fluffy almond head that has o.k. retention and leaves specks of lacing. Aroma is caramel, earth, fruitcake, plum, alcohol and a little citrus. Flavor is licorice, caramel, some berry tartness, buttery pie crust, musty earth and wood notes, grapefruit, lots of spicy hops and some bitter hops and mellow earth to finish, I think I would like thes better if the hops were mellowed a bit as they seems to clash, some aging may help. Palate is medium, sticky, kind of syrupy and a bit overcarbonated. BeerBunker (616), Burbank, Illinois, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 7, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours amber with the most minimal white head. Aroma is of malt, spice, alcohol, caramel, and dark fruit. Taste is of caramel, spice, malt, alcohol, bread, and citrus. Big alcohol presence, and a nice lingering alcohol effect. Body is very carbonated and light. Mouthfeel is light, yet very sticky. Kind of a dissapointment. SamGamgee (1465), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Mar 4, 2009 12oz bottle, batch 8863. Deep red-amber color with light sediment and a light beige head. Cherry, vanilla, toffee, and caramel aroma. Caramel, toffee, and vanilla flavors with a strong lingering hop bitterness and hot alcoholic finish. Full bodied and smooth. The hops seem to accentuate the alcohol and make it so you really need to sip this one. I can see a year or two making this really nice but right now I’m wondering how hopslam at almost the same strength is so much more drinkable than this is. | 1.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 1/20 | Mar 4, 2009 Pours looking like iced tea with a thin tan head. Aroma i strong. Dark fruit is prominent in the aroma (strong raisin smell). Taste is sweet molasses, slight bitterness up front, and alcohol in this finish. Creamy and thick beer that is not as hot as the 10.4% ABV would suggest.
