Pours a dark brown, ruby hues, tan head. Aroma of dark fruit. Flavor is rich, dark fruit, licorice, sweet. Has a heavy body with med. carbonation. Very good barley wine! timsilvia32 (447), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 24, 2008 Dark amber pour, some dark creamish head. Quite a bit of malt, barrel like tones and booze in the nose. Malty but not too sweet, some brown sugar, peat, raisin. Nice and sticky, just a hint of some red fruit, very nice hop character toward the finish. Rather clean finish considering the stickiness. This was nice to me with respect to other barley wines in that it was not overpowering with the fruit flavors. No sourness. Definetely closer to an old ale, which it was an excellent one and believe it will be even more excellent with some aging. alassio (19), USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 24, 2008 Some barleywines are like licorice, some slam you with odd twists of hard-edged flavor, but this one is gentle, woodsy, creamy, amber/rust beautiful in the glass and - - something rare - - mild and complex for a barleywine - - like autumn leaves and walking down creaky deck upon subdeck of three-masted frigates from the 1800’s. The bitter hop profile is mostly back-of the tongue bitterness, with a small grassy element remaining from the florals of this one. The malts are smoky and peat-like. Finishes on a smoky note.
Vintage #8211. Same as above, but this one has some smoky leathery malty notes that just make this an incredibly delicious beer. coyotehunter (557), , Michigan, USA
