Thanks to Al at the Blue NIle. This was a great treat. A ruby pour with no head. Dark fruit and candied fruit aromas. Alcohol is well hidden with a noticable brandy touch. The dark sugary fruits shine through. Great beer!

Pours a brownish amber color with a really small off white head. Caramel and really malty flavor with a smell hint of alcohol. Taste is very sweet general barleywine flavor with a nice hop balance in the finish.

A moderately opaque red-brown beer with beige head. Nose has cookies, sweet dark fruit, a decent citrus caramel hop contribution, and slight alcohol. Flavor is syrupy with caramel and some bitterness. Full bodied. Overall, a little sweet and syrupy for my taste, but with a harsh bitter component. The beer is not well balanced.

Bottle courtesy polomagnifico. Pours a dark amber brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is thick caramel malt like raw liquid extract. Taste is very thick dark malt balanced by some spicy hop bitterness. Finishes thick and malty with some residual hop bitterness. Maybe I should try this when the weather is cooler, but it seemed unbalanced for something so highly rated and I must have gotten a bad bottle.

(Bottle (stamped "7800") via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=3 target=blank>shigadeyo, thanks Craig!, cellared for 1 year after trade) Big and malty...Pours murky dark rusty amber with some solid chunkies. Thin biege head. Aroma is big candy-sugar and brown sugar. Mouthfeel is smooth, quite full and not really too sticky, if at all. Thin fine rings of lacing melt away quickly. Taste is big sugar candy and brown sugar maltiness with a nice low-key piney bitter bite overlaying and providing a nice pinch in the finish. Nicely waming alcohol presence that emerges through finish, making it a touch hot, but a "mellow" hotness. A little bit of doppel-like smokiness. A nicely balanced, easy drinking, yummy big beer.

Dark, thick and Malty. This is a great Winter beer. I’m glad I was sitting in front of a cool fan when I drank this one.
