| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 19, 2008 pours mahagony, beige head. smell is citrus, slightly more restrained then the bear republic stuff i have been drinking. sweet toffee, and caramel are also prevolent as well as alcohol. almost brandy. some spices as well. thick sticky syrupy mouthfeel with loads of hops, citrus, but not overpoweringly acidic. extraordinary stuff. well balanced. probably the best since ive been home. dwr1962 (18), Wellsburg, West Virginia, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Mar 15, 2008 A superb brew- one of the very best Barley Wine-style ales I have had. The alcohol is high but not out of balance. This one would be good to age, too. MrEcted1 (144), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 14, 2008 A very nice winter warmer from Bells. This beer looks fantastic to me, pours a deep amber color with lots of chewy floaties (which I love). Smells nice and fruity with flavors like over-ripened apple. A very easy drinking BW style ale with just the right amount of hops and malt. Another winner from Bells! Sparky27 (1640), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 13, 2008 Bottle – batch 7800. Pours an opaque brown like caramel ice cream topping. Minimal head and zero lacing with some floaters. Nose is sweet malts and alcohol. Palate is a bit too sweet for my tastes with candied fruit, malt and a minor bitter alcohol aftertaste - not much hops in this one. At 10%, the ABV is nicely hidden. hoeg0015 (11), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 13, 2008 bottle. pours dark squash with little head. very sweet aroma, and i get strawberry and even some pineapple as soon as it hits the tongue. finishes extremely well, with a candy-sweetness, butterscotch, hanging around for a while. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 12, 2008 A delicate, somewhat pear-like aroma with spicy overtones. A light, creamy head with perky bubbles over a tea-like brew.
Overall flavor has so many notes ranging from cinnamon to honey, tobacco, and allspice giving way to a mellow, minerality that stays on the palate for a long time.
Old Ale would be a fine pair with an applewood smoked cheese and garlicy summer sausage. WallyWalrus (205), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 12, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a hazy amber with good carbonation and a wispy thin head. Aroma is sweet and thick, with strong notes of caramel, molasses, and dark fruit. Taste is creamy and medium-bodied, with an initial flavor of dark fruit and malt giving way to a long, mellow finish of molasses, syrupy hops, and spices. A balanced and approachable barleywine. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 12, 2008 Pours hazy red-brown with a one-finger off-white head. Brandy-soaked raisin aroma with thick toffee and loads of anise. Hints of nuttiness. Beautifully rich and elegant in the mouth: raisin, plum, caramel, and light tobacco are all there. Noticeable, but not intrusive, hoppiness rounds out the flavor. Excellent sipper.
