Fruit and roast aromas. Black fruity and a little rich on the palate. Some dryness in a crisp burnt roast finish. IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA Apr 6, 2009 Cask at the brewpub! Nose is roasty coffee with a chocolate hint. Very dark cherry brown with a big beige glass lacing head. Flavor is coffee, chocolate and very light hop bitterness. badlizard (2324), Berkeley, California, USA Mar 27, 2009 Dark brown with no head. Sweet toasty milk chocoalte taste with some oat notes to the finish. anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Jan 29, 2009 Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a dark brown almost black color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty chocolate aroma. Roasted malty chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate finish. JohnC (2225), Mission Viejo, California, USA Jan 28, 2009 I had this on tap at the brewpub in Santa Rosa.
Black pour, thin white head, dry roasty flavor, it was ok bhensonb (4180), Woodland, California, USA Nov 27, 2007 Draft at the brewpub. Toasted malt aroma. Maybe a chocolate hint. Near opaque brown/black color with a tan head. Medium body with very smooth carbonation. The flavor reminds of the old Guinness (this is a heavy porter). It’s a very toasted porter with a nice amount of bitter in the finish. GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Sep 6, 2007 Draft at the brewpub. Poured an opaque black color. Head was thin and off white. Not much aroma other than a hint of wet dog. Not a good smell. Dry and relatively flavorless other than subdued roasted malt. One of my least favorite. Wulfstan (509), California, USA Sep 5, 2007 Updated: Oct 26, 2007I have had this many times and it is consistently excellent, with a rich, foamy head and great texture and body. The flavour is strong and rich, being well-balanced with a roasted malt tatse but without too much of a coffee element too overpower it. I think this is an excellent porter and it is also very smooth and drinkable.
On Cask: On cask, this is definitely a little different, but I can’t fully identify how. The closest I can come is saying that it has more of caramel-spice element to the body, but it is more mild overall. It’s hard to say which way I like it better.
