bhensonb (3013), Woodland, California, USA Nov 27, 2007 Draft at the brewpub. Toasted malt aroma. Maybe a chocolate hint. Near opaque brown/black color with a tan head. Medium body with very smooth carbonation. The flavor reminds of the old Guinness (this is a heavy porter). It’s a very toasted porter with a nice amount of bitter in the finish. General_Gao (2575), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Sep 6, 2007 Draft at the brewpub. Poured an opaque black color. Head was thin and off white. Not much aroma other than a hint of wet dog. Not a good smell. Dry and relatively flavorless other than subdued roasted malt. One of my least favorite. Wulfstan (481), California, USA Sep 5, 2007 Updated: Oct 26, 2007I have had this many times and it is consistently excellent, with a rich, foamy head and great texture and body. The flavour is strong and rich, being well-balanced with a roasted malt tatse but without too much of a coffee element too overpower it. I think this is an excellent porter and it is also very smooth and drinkable.
On Cask: On cask, this is definitely a little different, but I can’t fully identify how. The closest I can come is saying that it has more of caramel-spice element to the body, but it is more mild overall. It’s hard to say which way I like it better. pivo (2488), Germany Mar 17, 2007 Potent roasted malt nose, dark brown color. Charcoal notes throughout with a espresso end. Thinish but OK for a porter. One-dimensional (roasted malt) but fun to drink. bb (2168), Martinez, California, USA Feb 12, 2007 Draft. Blackish beer with a tan head. Roasty/coffee aroma. Roasty flavor with coffee. Medium body. LIngering roast. A bit too much roast for my liking.
