On tap, nitro, at the brewpub in Santa Rosa I liked this beer. Great roasty/coffee aroma, dry mouthfeel, smooth, tasty.

(10/28/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Santa Rosa. Black-colored with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and some coffee notes. Sweetish roasty flavor with some coffee and light fruitiness. Medium-bodied.

Nitro tap at the brewpub. The black body was topped with a light tan head. Milk chocolate and bread were up front along with some peanuts in the nose. Roasted walnuts and some coffee mixed for a decent taste. A pancake sweet finish.

Very roasted malt backbone - very dry and nutty. Somewhat sour and watery.

Nitrogen powered at the brewpub. Aroma is something dusty over dark toasted malt. Opaque dark color with a very dark tan head. Full bodied with very smooth nitrogenation. The flavor is mild, smooth, toasted malt. Not at all harsh. The finish is more burnt toast than bitter. Coffee and chocolate were very low key.

Nitro tap at the brewpub. Poured an opaque black color. Head was creamy and light tan. Light roasted malt aroma. Tasted of watered down coffee and chocolate accented by tobacco. There was also a touch of shoe leather in the finish that detracted.

This has for some years been among my favourite stouts. It has a good smokey element and rich, full flavours. As one might expect, this has a toasty chocolate element, and it is almost perfect, lacking an odd burnt or skunky flavour that one can find, lingering just long enough, and not being too sharop or overpowering. It mellows out nicely without becoming thin, bland, and watery. It is also very well balanced and exceedingly smooth and drinkable. The head is pretty good, light tan, and creamy and it leaves pretty god lacing. It’s been hard for me to go back to Guinness ever since I found this. Give it a somewhat fuller head, body, and palate, and it would be aqbout perfect.
