afireinside96 (494), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 3, 2008 12oz bottle served in a stem glass. Very dark brown body topped by an inch of beige head. Dusty chocolate nose, some grassy hops. Semi-sweet chocolate dominates the flavor, some grassiness, earth. A touch of coffee emerges as it warms. Smooth and thick mouthfeel. Finishes with a hint of alcohol and some lingering roasted bitterness. Very good. Beerlando (1341), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 30, 2008 Pours an extremely dark mahogany color, glowing chestnut brown when strongly backlit. A foamy, beige colored head settles to a wispy film with a prominent edge, while spotty, soapy lace marks the glass. The aroma is really nice, showing the requisite darkly roasted chocolate and caramel malts, along with notes of vanilla, figs, and hints of dark cherries. Flavors mimic the nose, robust choco-caramel, dark fruits, and oaky vanilla all working well together. Earthy hops lend bittering balance to the deeply roasted malty notes. A smooth, creamy, substantial palate really sets this off as a really nice brew. Overall, this is a great session porter. Rich, chocolaty, and fruity, with equal parts divine complexity and easy drinking sensibility. 502Flavors (267), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Sep 27, 2008 I had this one once about a year ago. Great name and label. 12 oz. into shaker. Very dark brown pour, but not black, as I had wished. Nice creamy light tan head that holds decently well with no lacing. Solid, though somewhat faint, aroma of chocolate, vanilla, oak, coffee, and even some dark cherries. Flavor is solid and balanced, though not super outgoing - same as aroma but a bit more roasty and almost even smokey with a faint trace of hops on the finish. Medium bodied and smooth on the palate with minimal carbonation. Overall: though it isn’t really "Robust," as they claim, this brew is very solid, highly drinkable, and a great sessioner for porter fans. riversideAK (1630), Shoreline, Washington, USA Sep 20, 2008 Bottle from yem25. Dark brown pour with a thin bubbly head. Aroma is moderate and comprised of chocolate and light roast. Chocolate upfront with roast rounding it out. Some sweetness and some roast fight in the finish. Medium body with bitey carbonation. A little earthy and dry as well. Enjoyable porter. MaltDawg (369), Richmond, Virginia, USA Sep 6, 2008 Capital Ale House Innsbrook 08/25/2008.
Nice roast malt nose with touch of wood and smoke. Dark amber brown with small white head. Roast malt flavor with slight grain astringency. Some fruity notes along with burnt sugar and molasses. Light body and dry finish with residual smoke and wood coming out.
Excellent beer.
