Gusler (2656), Tucson, Arizona, USA Nov 19, 2004 The beer after its disinterment from the 12-ounce brown bottle sets in the glass an atramentous color with a thick creamy chocolate brown head that is modest in size and after its dissolution the lace forms a glutinous sheet that melds with the glass. Nose is rich in sweet roasted grain aromas, fresh and pleasing to the senses, start is sweet and thick with malt, and the top is full in its feel to the palate. Finish is benignly acidic and the hops pleasantly spicy in their bite, desert bone dry aftertaste that lingers long on the palate, a fine representative to the style.
Imaena (218), Portland, Maine, USA Aug 20, 2008 Bottle 08.’ Black pour with a thick crema head. Nose is coffee, chocolate, malts, and all that you want in abig Imperial Stout. Flavor is much the same with some warmth and appropriate bitterness. Big bosy and well balanced. thickfreakness (53), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours absolutely pitch black with a huge mocha head that won’t go away. This one looks great. Smells strongly of coffee grounds, dark chocolate, bitter roast, and cream. Taste is similar with a huge roast/chocolate/coffee flavor and a nice hop/bitter roast finish. Really smooth and easy to drink. Not much sign of the alcohol. A great, underdog RIS. nqualls (113), Tennessee, USA Aug 15, 2008 12 oz bottle. Poured a solid black with a small head. Chocolate and coffee aromas were huge, with a little alcohol too. Lacing was above average. Flavor was sweet malt with some chocolate and a little warming alcohol on the end. Creamy mouthfeel with soft but adequate carbonation. Arrière goût chocolaté. (Rating #1881) grandridge (137), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA Aug 8, 2008 Did a blind side by side with victory storm king stout (It’s a tough life) and I’d have to say I liked them both but the storm king wins. But this brew is very unique for an impy. It’s not the same as the other run of the mill impys kind of out there with Black Albert but more sweet and less spice. Aroma is sweet definitly a lot of caramel in there. Mouthfeel is like a light syrup which is why I thought the Storm King was better. To say it is lightly carbonated would be an understatment. Flavor is caramel (big) and chocolate sweetness that is throughout. I have to agree with the guy before me (1_2many) when he said that you think the aftertaste will hang out but it actually finished a lot cleaner than I thought. Just a solid and different impy stout, one of the better beers out there.
