Smoky dry nose. Coffeeish. Medium body, soft carb. Ultra dry ashy body. Finish is smoky, ashy, and chalky. This is an exceptionally dry and astringent beer from beginning to end, but especially on the finish--the finish is really puckery. Unusual in many ways. But you could argue that it would be impossible to make a beer any more what it set out to be than this one; it’s kind of a zenith of an interpretation of the style. Very intense! mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA

Nice sausage, smoke, dark malts, and heavy roast swirled around my nostrils. The flavor wasnt nearly as smoky but very delightful. Nice full flavor. Good body to it. Good chocolate right up front, nice roast, with just a touch of that smoke I got in the smell. A little alcohol is present with a great smooth chocolatey finish. Fantastic! JMFG (1514), Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 15, 2007 Courtesy boboski. Pours a nice thick dark chestnut color with bits of light tan head swirling around. Smells real smoky right off, but a nutty roast aroma comes out more as it warms. Rich, creamy palate. Smoke, Brazil nuts, chocolate on the taste; nice roast character through the middle. A very rich, full brew - earthy like a cup of dark coffee. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 13, 2007 Updated: Jun 28, 2007Medium sized creamy head, tan with white remnants. Light, soft looking lacing. The body is a sensuous shade of dark auburn brown with shimmering blood red peeking out from deep within. The head diminishes somewhat, leaving fat groups of bubbles at the edge - the clusters resemble an outline of flower petals around the visible body. What a shocking aroma! Moderate smoke entanged with heavily roasted grains, Dutch chocolate and bristling with caramel and aniseed. Alcohol is well concealed thus far. Starfruit, raisin bread and peanut butter make flighty appearances. This is utterly complex and certifiably one-of-a-kind. Smoke in the nose is reminiscent of the effect of running a beer through lines that accomodated a rauchbier not long ago, such as the residual effect noticed all too easily (and to my delight) in Schlenkerla Helles. A marvelous addition to most any roasty beer, certainly permissible in this scenario. Flavor is chock full of the aforementioned components, but the center of attention is the roast and smoke one-two punch. Bitterness is mild to moderate, sweetness about the same. Alcohol is still fairly well masked. The last part of each sip gives me a feeling that resembles just melted chocolate gliding slowly down my throat. The finish is very smooth, leaving behind a lightly smoky and heavily roasty and chocolatey blend, as well as lingering hints of vanilla and scorched earth. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, velvety, but unleashes crushing malt and the palate is overall very affable. Carbonation is medium but remains soft and enhances the drinkability. An absolutely wonderful treat. This will remain a sought after beer for me. A few more should do. heemer77 (4309), Savannah, Missouri, USA

Wow, thanks a lot to oh6gdx for putting this in a trade! The body was perfectly black with a khaki colored head. The aroma was nice and roasted with soybeans and some excellent coffee. The taste was strongly roasted, almost smoked, with a lot of coffee. There was also some green bean character, but it was complementary, not detrimental. An interesting and subtle brew. I would love to try this one again. Magicdave6 (5546), London, Greater London, England
