The first beer I sampled at the 2007 Asheville Brewgrass Festival, and also one of the best. After a long drive down there, this was the perfect way to start the festival. For a doppelbock, it had a very nice, smooth, drinkable palate, unlike some I’ve tried which tend to be somewhat syrupy. The aroma was toasty and caramelly, and the taste was everything you would expect from a d.bock but with a tad more sweetness. Overall, I liked it, and it was refreshing.

12 oz bottle from Jmichael. Clear, very dark redish brown with a thick beige head. Nose is earthy molasses, very sweet malt. Sweet, thick malt flavors, light cocoa, milk chocolate, some tangy hop.Not bad, but a rather simple doppel.

Bottle: Deep burnt caramel, moderate frothy light beige head, so-so lacing.   Prunes, raisins, biscuits, and oh so very slight soy, peat, and charred wood on the nose.   Much simpler on the tongue, a little tangy like prunes, somewhat watery, finishing like raisin flavored water.   Pretty darn simple, without much malt backing.   Not off, not bad, maybe a bit old, but really just not all there.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to thin.   Astringint dark pitted fruit peel lingers, but not so much the sweet bits inside.   Meh...   Thanks Phil for the bottle!

Bottle - Not much Aroma that I could find in this one.. Kinda bland, not what I would expect from a Doppelbock... I don’t think this should be classified as a German style Doppelbock. Was a disappointment to me.

Pours a hazy brown with a thick off-white head. Sour aroma, and the same sour taste as their cream ale. I gotta believe there is an infection problem.

12-ounce. Thanks, BitBucket! This one’s clearly infected and I’ll have to re-rate when I get the chance. Pours deep opaque black with a thick, moussy head atop it; head falls away to scant film within a minute or so. Nose, attack, and palate are all predominated by intensely sour laundry/basement funk. Palate feels dead-on, slightly creamy but clean and easy-drinking. No way to smell or taste anything though.

(Bottle) Obtained in a trade with shp555. Pours a thin, quick dissipating brown head atop an opaque red tinged body. Nose is oddly tart with a sweet Christmas pudding spiciness to it. Very tart tongue, somewhat lambic mixed with an old spiced ale. Lots of brown sugar and sour old fruit across the palate. I like it but it is far from what I’d determine to be a doppelbock.
