Commercial Description:
The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

Flip-top bottle. Deep brown color with a small to medium head. Aroma of coffee and deep roasted malt. Plus a bit of liquorice. Flavor is very rich, with a lot of bitter chocolate. Nice hop bitterness at the finish. Medium to heavy body. A great brew.

large swing top bottle labeled bottled in 2005. found this on a clearance rack at the store for 7.99 and liked the bottle. bottle top opened with a loud pop, pours a dark black in color with a one finger head that settled down to a nice thin layer. smell is of malts, coffee, sweet caramel, and some dark spices. taste is less carbonated than the bottle opening would lead one to believe, coffee tones with nice malted tastes, a little bitterness, dark chocolate, and slight spices. there is definitely some alcohol in there but it is balanced well and the only complaint is the bitterness at the end is a little overdone for my taste, taste seems to come from the malts.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of Kramer17801. Pours a hazy, deep brown with a reddish hue and a beige head. Lightly tart nose with burned malt accents. Medium body with burned malt and both sweetness and acidity. Malt astringent finish. The slight infection doesn’t spoil the fun completely. 290607

Bottle. Pours black-brown with a small beige head. Aroma is very roasted has tones of dark chocolate as well, but has an underlying sourness to it. Flavour though is unbalanced, there is a clear definition of sourness that probably shouldn’t be there. Too bad, but this one was certainly infected.

Bottle. Large creamy light brown head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Color was black. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, burned malt, liquorish. Medium bodied with an average carbonation. Moderated sweet flavor, hint of bitter and also sour notes (don’t think they should have been there). Light sour finish.
