Commercial Description:
The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

Sample at Indy tasting Dick’s 96th - Aroma of roasty chocolate malts, black licorice, and hops. Pours black with no head or lacing. Flavor matches aroma with a bit of coffee and vanilla thrown in. Palate is sticky. Very nice.

Tasting at Immy’s. From a large swing-top bottle. Poured a deep brown with coffee head. Nose is roasted caramel malt and a grape sweetness. Flavor is thick, roasted caramel with coffee finish. Rather nice.

Bottled in 2005. Pours deep black into a tulip. Caramel and coffee notes. Bubbles hugging rim is about the only head. Creamy with roasted caramel and chocolate. Long, slightly bitter finish.

Bottle at Immy’s Tasting on 7-22-06. Dark brown to black and opaque. Tall foamy tan head. Nose is roasted, chocolaty (maybe even chocolate covered peanuts) and coffee-ish. Taste is roasty, light coffee notes, dark chocolate and some slight nuttiness. Body is chewy but well carbonated. Finishes with more chocolate, coffee and roasted malts.

From Immy’s Tasting. Started this thing off with a bang. Deep brown appearance, slight head. Good chocolate aroma. Flavor was chocolate oriented as well, rich, with a touch of a roasted note. Had some complexity to it, almost like a good mole, but not a spicy one. Really nice.

Wow. Deep brown, lasting head. Dark brown, bitter lager, very full body with a slight burn/warming feeling from the second it hits your tongue and last on through. Sweet-Roasted-bitter. Loved this one. Another favorite from Immy’s Tasting.

2005 bottling. Deep red-brown body with reddish highlights. Aroma of chocolate, bitter, piney hops, licorice, and coffee grinds. Bitter coffee body, charred malts, with a long, bitter roasty and hoppy finish. Hints of licorice and touches of caramel. Rich palate, dense flavor profile, reminding me a bit of Great Divide Yeti. One of those beers that wasn’t love at first sip, but improved in my mind dramatically after enjoying several ounces. A winner.
