Commercial Description:
The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

1 qt. 1.8 oz bottle (1 liter) flip top bottle. I bought this as much for the bottle as for the beer. I poured this into a snifter. What a gorgeous beer. Absolutely black with about a ¾ inch tan head. Lacing is left in rings and spots on the glass. The aroma is of roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate. The taste gives much of the same with a bitterness on the palate after swallowing. The glass gets a little sticky as this warms, but the taste never goes sweet. This is a well balanced beer and the ABV will sneak up on you if you are not careful. And do let it warm up!

Pours dark brown with a hint of red with a good lasting head. A malty coffee, chocolate aroma. Slightly sweet with a good coffee taste. A smooth creamy body with a good lasting finishing bitter. thanks kp

This porter pours a deep black color from a 1-liter bottle. Large sized white foamy head. Aroma is chocolate and coffee. A medium to full bodied porter. Malts are very lush chocolate and coffee. The hops are slightly spicy and earthy. Very smooth tasting. Nicely balance. Lot of flavor in this one. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet.

Bottle (1litre). Shared with Sammy and DrJay, Sammy’s bottle. Poured deep cloudy brown with a big foamy-rocky beige head. Pungent, funky aroma of fresh green hops, lactic overroast malt and grain - but mostly serious hops. Flavour follows on with the hops and strong malted roastiness (Jay was heard to mutter something about "black patent") - this is simple and elegant - strong fresh hops and pure malted grains - I don’t really get much coffee character, but it’s sure bitter and has a nice long linger. Decent body to it, quite acidic/astringent - hoppiest porter ever - terrific brew and a big thanks to Sammy for sharing.

Dark colour, thin head, then after bigger head, bit of lace, excellent roast and hop aroma, smooth chocolate taste. Perfect carbonation, bit of bitterness but smooth for taste, nice roastiness. Underlying bitterness, but balanced with maltiness. Rich, full mouthfeel. Moderate astringency would be Great with dinner.

bottle. Pours an super-extra deep red with a thin tan head. The aroma packs the usual coffee/bittersweet chocolate notes but also a juicy sweetness. This is really bold in the mouth with bright, tangy coffee and very solid chocolate undertones. The obvious presence of piny hops is a nice surprise. It all comes together in the finish like a fine cigar. Awesome winter warmer!

Black pour with a thin brown head. Rich aroma with coffee, hazelnut, vanilla, caramel, milk. Clean and roasty in flavor with some balancing sweetness and a strong hop compliment. Quite bitter in finish. Nice.

2005 Oak Aged, on tap at Mug’s. Dark brown, nearly black with a good sized tan head. Roasted chocolate malt aroma with some dark dried fruits and brown sugar. Flavor was much more intense than the aroma. Besides the dark roasted malts, flavor of molasses, raisins, vanilla and a bit of soy come through.
