Commercial Description:
The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

Sampled with the last 5 guys who rated this at heavyweight. Nice deep dark brown with mahogany highlights. Aroma is chocolate, a bit of coffee, caramel, and a bit of roast. Flavor is very rich and smooth with lots of sweet malts including munich, chocolate and crystal. Some nutty hints as well. Good smooth robust and complex beer. Nice smooth finish.

Aromas of toasted malts and sweet caramel. Taste is rich in flavors of maple syrup, chocolate and grains. After the sweetness there is a nice lingering hop flavor. Nicely balanced.

05.07.05 Thanks to MaiBockAddict for bringing this 1L swingtop in my vicinity not once, but twice. Dry and bitter for a baltic. Plenty roasty, creamy, lightly eff. Tar. Resin. Railroad tie. Very bitter and terribly dry on finish. Potent. I’m glad I only had a sample and not a whole bottle. Love the style, love the beer, but I’m not in love with this harsh and over the top interpretation of baltic porter...I so wanted it to be perfect, too.

Poured a dark amber / brown color with a small light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast, chocolate, and sweet caramel malts. Taste of roasted, and small caramel malts, smoke, and lots of chocolate. Very light alcohol in the taste.

3/19/05. Poured out of 1 L bottle, sampled courtesy of jcalabre on RateBeer at Pizza Port 12-Hour Belgian Fest in Carlsbad, CA 3/19/05. Dark brown-auburn in color with some transparency. Dusty lacing that separates at the rocky bubbles, very nice and dense where it goes. Thin whisp of a dark tan head but an otherwise excellent appearance. Nose of light chocolate, unsweetened, and dark malt. Cocoa powder with soft peat and moss. Dark malt and dry bitter flavor, chocolate dust and big leafy hops, faint wood. Really good mouthfeel, medium-full, slick and silky. A lovely texture that offsets the dark malt, chocolate and wood. Finishes really dry wtih stern roast and dark malt. Very well-balanced, very good stuff.

With a dark fruit sweetness on the nose, there was really nothing else. The smell was thin as was the flavor. The flavor had a little coffe and a caramel sweetness but that was it. The beer poured a dark brown color w/ slight head and lacing. The mouthfeel was medium bodied and creamy. I didn’t like this beer very much.
