Commercial Description:
The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

2006 vintage Swingtop, thanks to JB175. Pours an opaque blackish brown with an insanely thick tan head. Chocolate and yeast aroma with fruity, estery notes. Molasses and fruit taste. Dry espresso and wood finish, with unexpected sour notes. Not quite what I was expecting from a Baltic Porter.

Dark brown in color with a light-medium tan head. Aroma is a sweet and roasty mix of coffee, dark chocolate, roasty-sweet malts, molasses, and toffee. Flavor has a dark chocolate/coffee/roasty malt dominance up front with a slightly tangy/bitter hop flavor with an interesting yeast taste. Not great right out of the fridge, but quite tasty upon warming. A really good Baltic Porter that is one of the better brews in the style (in my opinon). Mouthfeel is thinner, but quite pleasant - good for a night you want something between a lighter porter and an Expedition.

Bottle. Hazy dark brown allmost black colour with a nice head. Nice aroma of coffee, roastedness but also hints of sourness. Flavour of roastedness, sourness and choco-coffee.

Swingtop (2006) from an estimable gentleman from the other site. Nice looking pour, with a somewhat subdued aroma. I worry that I don’t have a representative bottle, because I get absolutely no coffee and very little malts from this; the flavor is overwhelmed by very sour dark fruits, leaving no room in the medium to light bodied brew for any complexity. Shame, as I was really looking forward to this. I’ll be happy to rerate if given the opportunity.

Pours a near black in color. Smell has some subdued hops in the nose and some caramel malt. Taste is rather lacking, but the mouthfeel is absolutely wonderful. Full, creamy and velvety. Just not a whole lot going on in the flavor to warrant a good score.

Sample provided by scraff. Clear brown body with a small, light tan head. The nose is chocolate, molasses, toffee and grapes. The flavor is moderately sweet with raisins, molasses, chocolate and alcohol. Medium/full body is soft with light carbonation and a sligthly thin finish.

2006 vintage, 500 ml bottle. excellent porter. the finish is outstanding with a smoky, caramel flavor. aromas of malts... not much else. pours a black color with a thin tan head. this is one of the best porters I’ve had and is highly recommended. Very drinkable given the abv. Enjoy one soon.

Bottle procured via trade with porterhouse. Pours black with an average, frothy, light brown head, diminishing with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, chocolate, nutty, coffee), average hops (perfume, pine), average yeast (dough) with notes of prunes. Full bodied, alcoholic texture, soft carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.
