Commercial Description:
This traditional red ale gets its unique color from an interesting blend of pale, caramel and roasted malts which promote a sweetness that’s then balanced with crisp, authentic English-style hops. A very unique and drinkable red that’s also favored by amber-lovers. And not only on St.Paddy’s day, but the other 364 days of the year as well.

12 oz bottle-pours a light tan head and dark copper color. Aroma is dark malt-smoky/roasty. Taste is dark malt-smoky/roasty, some caramel sweetness (slightly burnt), flat/earthy hops with some bitterness. Right on style. Dryish finish. OK carbonation.

On draught. Pours a hazy red with a robust head of creamy off white foam that sticks to the sides of the glass throughout the drinking experience. Smells of hyssop, roses and yogurt, almost like you’d expect in an APA. Taste is sweet and caramelly with a decent slightly bitter finish. This brewer continues to impress me with their excellent offerings.

Bottle sampled 7/27/06

Pours red with a tan dissipating head. Smells sweet with some grassy hops and sugary splashes. Tastes lightly earthy and peppery with some underlying roastiness. This one was translated from draught to bottle well.

cask at the Brazen Head Deep dark brown colour with a thick creamy white head. Deeply toasted caramel malt aroma over some nuttiness and soft cherry esters. Warming really softens the maltiness and brings it into balance with the sweet esters. Fresh bread and earthy hop flavour. Tasty brown ale, plenty of malt complexity with a lingering fresh earthy/spicy hop finish.

Bottle from the variety pack, which just showed up in NE PA. This one pours a deep brownish ruby color, with a fluffy, 2-finger head that reappears with every repour. The aroma is caramel malty, with some hops and a heavy vinous fruit smell. The taste is malty and red winey fruity, with backup nuts and toffee. Nice complexity and balance.

A reddish auburn ale with a thick creamy lacing off white head. A lightly caramelly malt aroma, with light sulfur notes. In mouth, a classy red ale with malt, roasted nuts, and light hopping. No cloying butterscotch here. Bought in Willimantic, CT, Elm Package Store, Inbiernationale IV, May 2007.
