Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Been waiting to try this one for a while, at $8.99. Very dark brown, aroma of roasted malts, alcohol. Flavor is lightly sweet/nutty, with malt as the main player here. A little alcohol sting afterwards, but very little. Much thinner bodied than I expected, doppelbocks of this caliber are available for much less $.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of Kramer17801. Hazy, orangey brown with a small, rough, off-white head. Aroma of burned caramel. Rather full body with plenty of roasted malt, burned caramel, lots of fruit and a fairly bitter finish - a lot more bitter than a German Doppelbock. 310807

RB# 1400: 50 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a lacing light brown head. Malty nose with a minor but distinct apple/citrus fruitiness. Heavy flavour of roasted malt and a slight herbal note, clearly lifted by alcohol without becoming dominant at all. Bitter and still malty in the finish.

Dark brown color. Some sweet caramel aroma and flavor; good body strength; too much alcoholic, too simple.

A very solid beer, but not really my style of dopplebock. Very chocolate and roasted, which is very nice, but I was expecting something more along the lines of Celebrator. The slightly sour, tannic finish was nice with the roasted body of the beer, but it did not earn that many style points from me.

pours rich mahogany with thin khaki head. aroma is burnt caramel, dark fruit, chocolate, booze and sweet toffee. taste is somewhat roasty caramel, toffee, dark fruit, and a somewhat mineral tart nature. finish is a sour mineral and roasty sweetness. good but a little thin for a doppelbock to me.
