jrob21 (1249), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 5, 2006 Winter schminter, try perfect for fourth of july. Big roasted malt aromas. Very wheaty taste. Get a little chocolate in there too. Full bodied great beer. Don’t try to drink this yourself though since you have a quart of it. Hangover (764), Atlanta, USA Jul 3, 2006 2006 bottle. Near black pour, red highlights and a lasting creamy tan head. Very coffeish aroma. Slightly sweet with a bit of citrus hops evident. Mouthfeel is worth noting with active carbonation and smooth creaminess. Dried fruit taste with an alcohol presence throughout. Fig, plum, date and some chocolate towards the end. Flavor abounds throughout... this is a GOOD beer. Funny thing, this is a BIG bottle lol, with 8% abv they should call this thing the Terminator instead of the Liberator, no heavy machinery operation for at least 6 hours. This was 9 bucks but I’m glad I picked it up. Right up there with Celebrator. MullMan (1079), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA Jun 25, 2006 on tap at the Gate, Brooklyn. dark cherry/mohagany brown color, a little reddish golden at edges. short thin creamy dark tan head. aroma of licorice, strong malt, bitter molasses. flavor is a little different than others of this style - a little peaty and earthy dryish malt, more dry licorice root and bitter molasses. kind of like a dark german wheat or pumpernickel bread. some sweet malty notes there but mostly through roasted malt flavors. a bit of distilled wood. pleasantly unique, but not my favorite doppelbock. CharlesDarwin (1821), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA May 23, 2006 Julios Spring Beer Festival. Pour of slightly murkied medium nut brown, with ruddy fringes. Light fragrant gentle aroma of red plums and sweet melons. Rich and warmingly alcoholic taste of sweet brown sugar and a touch of almond paste. The malty crispness bellows through the light floral fruits and shows a rearing head of nipping alcohols. One lick from a good chocolate bar. A touch of euro hops round out for good balance. Well done. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA May 21, 2006 Sample at Julio’s beer festival: Dark brown body. Malt dominated with chocolate and caramel. Lingering finish on the tongue. Nice, first one of the day and probably the best. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA May 20, 2006 JJpm74 was kind enough to send me both the 2005 and 2006 versions of this, and they need to be split out, because they are different beers entirely. Having said that, I’ll be rating the 2006 version. The pour was deep brown/black with a nice 3-finger brown head. The aroma was very roasty, caramelly malty, with a lot of dark fruit, some cabernet, and a nice perfumy floral hop component. The flavor was roasty malty, with a creamy mouthfeel, and a lot of nuts, figs, brown sugar, and chocolate syrup. The palate is velvety, smooth, complex, and chocolate syrupy as it warms. Nicely done, and another elite beer from this elite brewer. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA May 14, 2006 From a 1 liter swing top brown bottle, 2006 vintage, served at cellar temperature.
Made a very good good appearance, poured a opaque red hued dark chocolate brown with a large fluffy, rocky, foamy tan head that slowly settled into a rocky, foamy, creamy lacing with a small amount of sticking, good carbonation.
Had a big toasted dark malty nose with bare hints of charcoal, caramelized malts.
A crisp, malt textured and creamy smooth medium bodied mouth feel, exceptional drinkability.
Roasted and toasted malt taste, complex in it’s structure, caramelize malts and burnt chocolate, a great delicious crispiness from the malts, a herbal bite towards the end and a dry roasted and toasted malty finish.
What more can be said, a great doppelbock, a must try. BigBastard (668), L.A., California, USA May 6, 2006 Deep aroma of fruit, malt and some spice. Flavors big on malt, brown sugar, some fruit and spice notes. Very good overall.
