Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Sample courtesy of Wohlfs. Pours dark amber. Decent malt aroma and flavor. Too thin for a doppel.

Thank you to DYIsoccer- for bring this down to SD> I am going to rate the newsest vintage. I gave the 2004 a 7/5/8/4/17----- 2005---- Poursa cloudy brown hue with a small head. Aromas of cocoa a hint of coffee with a slight sour funk and a light bittering in the nose. Flavors of cocoa, caramel, with a mellow finish, but still seems overcloying. Very different than the 04 and should have it’s own seperate rating.

This one was a bit different. I’m not a big fan of doppelbocks in general but this was different. Poured dark brown with a nice full tan head. It doesn’t seem like a doppelbock. It had a hoppy/fruity aroma. The flavor was much like cherry. Doppelbocks to me are meaty. This wasn’t. Fruity and a little sour. Good but not what I recall from other doppelbocks. Porterish.

2004 - Pours with a dark brown body topped by a thin head with little lacing. The aroma and flavor are sweet and malty with a slight roastiness, a little caramel and a touch of bitterness. Very nice. Medium to full bodied, smooth and a touch dry. 8/3/9/4/17 2005 - Pours with a cloudy dark brown body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is sour and funky with a slight malt note. The flavor is slightly sweet and malty with a touch of sourness and a very slight roastiness. Medium to full bodied, fizzy and a touch dry. 6/4/7/4/13

2005 bottle. Aroma starts with a quick burst of coffee and chocolate. It’s a bit metallic, too, which was unexpected. Very dark brown with a good head and lacing. Flavor was very well balanced with roasted malts, breadiness, nuttiness and some piney hops. The hops left the finish dry and a bit bitter, but not too much so. Pretty good.

2004 vintage. Full, sweet, malty aroma, plenty of caramel and chocolate along with notes of date, raisin and faintly spicy hops. Deep mahogany color with a slight, fine light tan head. Flavor profile is satisfyingly malty and full, having copious amounts of sweetness and caramel complexity, some creaminess noted as well as some dark fruitiness, breadiness, nut and mild alcohol towards the finish. Some lingering licorice and cocoa. Exceedingly smooth palate with a medium-full body. Very nice and seemingly quite authentic.
