Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Ruby body with an off white head. Fruit aroma, mainly cherries are what I got, along with a whiff or two of hops. More of the cherries in the taste, but they were much more subduded along with some carmel and nuttiness, and some chalkienss that I always seem to get in the dopplebocks that brings down the taste a bit.

Re-rate of the 2004 bottle: Pours brown with a generous lasting tannish head. Aromas of strawberries, bananas, and yogurt. Taste is very nutty in the best way possible with some great allspice notes. Slightly alcoholic on the finish. Damn, this is one hell of a brew!

2006 Bottle sampled 4/12/06:

Smells nutty and malty with some molasses. Tastes roasty with some nice chocolatey elements and some mellow bittering hops. Some coffee elements present. Finishes tingly but not quite as buttery as the 2004 and 2005 bottlings.

Opened with a "pop" that stopped my heart momentarilly (first time opening one of these bottles) WOW! Anyways.... Pours a very dark blood red color, a decent size off white head sits atop, with some smaller dabs and streaks of lacing. Aroma is sweet, full of darker fruits and a litlte chocolate/sweetness. Flavor is sweet and malty. Lots of fruit and roasted malt taste to it. Cherries, plums, a little chocolate, and a little "nutty" flavor to it as well. Thanks to IMTheOptimator for this one!

Bottle, from Manchester Wine & Liquor. Good nose, Sweet. Cocoa, carmel, little egg or stale scent. Clean reddish dark brown color, Nice head that faded at a moderate pace, that reduced to a ring. Though a more hastily secong pouring created a big fluffy head. Malty bitter flavors, coffee, baking chocolate. Little metal, steel, thing.Medium body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Very tasty. Paul Davis does it again.

Big thanks to Odeed for sharing. Aroma is corriander, fish, and subtle chocolate with an oxidized smell. It was hard to pick up on any big scents. Ruby body with a cream head. Taste is chocolate, raspberries, crystal malts, wheat. Pretty good beer, just not Top 50 material.
