Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

500mL bottle bottled in 2006 poured into a tulip. Pours a dark mahogany with an off-white head that dissipated to a ring fairly quickly and leaves decent lacing on the way down. The aroma is big on dark caramel malts with dome significant spices, especially cinnamon. Plenty of sweet dark fruits as well with a little bit of sourness to it, possibly from oxidation. The taste has the sweetness of the dark fruits and caramel malts up front with the spices really kicking in toward the finish. The finish itself is very dry. The mouthfeel is a little lighter than I was expecting with decent carbonation and pretty dry. This is a good doppelbock, but it’s certainly not as good as I expected. This bottle may have been a little oxidized, so I may try and find a fresh bottle to review.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with big light tan head. Nice light body. Grainy caramel and light molasses. Brown sugar. Light roast. A very approachable and not-too-aggressive doppelbock. Very good.

bottle by way of dogfish120love... age is unknown.

dark brown coffee colored pour with a dirty white head. lots of spotty lacing is left as it retreats into the glass.

the aroma is quite sweet and reminiscent of a baltic porter... molasses, lots of nice toasty grain, caramel, skunky/noble hoppiness, chocolate, mild coffee nuttiness and raisins (gold and black).

the palate is nowhere near sweet as the aroma lead me to believe...luckily. flavors of coffee, caramel, nearly burned sugar, toasted nuts, burned raisins, ample grain and a lightly bitter dry finish. pumpkin pie spiciness (clove especially), coffee and skunky hops (spent coffee oil?) find their way into the aftertaste. the body is medium to full with a very soft creamy texture. the mouth feel is insanely light and airy. 8/5/9/4/18/4.4

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted caramel malty aroma. Medium to heavy body. Medium to heavy roasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer that is excellent for style

Bottled. Pours a nice dark black w/a smallish not insubstantial head. NIce classic malty-choco-bread doppelbock aroma. Taste is nice and malty with a bitter kick at the end. Worth your while.

Swingtop bottle

Deciding to open something new I found this in the cellar. Popping it open I was greeted with an interesting take on a doppelbock. This was a great beer to try though I don’t think I’ll be picking up another one unless I run across it on clearance somewhere on a road trip.

Aroma / Appearance - A half finger dirty white head swirled fluidly around the tulip glass. The smell of musty books, cherry pits, wet earth and black coffee were the whole of the experience. A little weaker than expected I thought it would have just a bit more richness.

Flavor / Palate - Creamy with a dry bitterness the coffee start yields to light smoke and hazel. Afterwards come a malty finish. Light on the tongue for the style I feel that could have been just a bit thicker. Nonetheless it was a nice drink for a cool fall evening.

Bottled in 2006/SwingTop Poured into a chalice a nice dark brown color, nice carbonation, an an amazing creamy one-finger plus tan head, which lasted forever, now some nice little islands and sticky lacing throughout the drink. The nose is of sweet malts, vanilla, and toffee/caramel. The taste is sweet and slightly bitter malts, nice touch of vanilla, lots of toffee/caramel. Medium body, smooth/thick with a nice chewy body. Very drinkable, man this is an awesome Doppelbock, probably the best I’ve had to date, quite different, highly recommended.

Bottle thanks to jjpm74. Pours a dark brown with small brown head. nose had heavy roasted malt. Flavor is light coffee, roasted malt and bitter sweet chocolate. Texture is as smooth and creamy with chocolate, I know I said it had that already, but it rocks. This is the downright prime example of this style if there was one.
