Pours with a thin collection of large, light brown bubbles atop a nearly black, dark brown body. Good lacing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, light soy sauce, toasted malts, light bread yeast, and nuts. Taste is strong with astringent caramel (like the sauce you put on flan), with nuts, followed by soy. Creamyish mouthfeel, light bubbles. dogfish120love (258), west hartford, Connecticut, USA

Sweet and roasty malt flavor, also some fruit. (I don’t get any chocolate.) The finish is substantial, somewhat bitter. Overall, there’s balance and lots of complexity, definitely letting you know you are drinking a serious and quality brew. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA

Rich and a soft roast flavor, hints of smoked malts, dark chocolate, and some dark fruit notes. Very smooth palate with some earthy notes in the finish. Bockyhorsey (2511), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 28, 2008 500ml bottled 2006 courtesy of eaglefan538. Sweet somewhat roasted aroma. Black body just a small bacteria dirty white head. Flavor has sweet malts up front like most dopplebocks. As beer warms a creamy roasty chocolate emerges that takes the overpowering sweetness away. Good roasty coco on the finish with roasted nut and some sweetness lingering on the palate. Good sipping brew to calm me after talking to a liberal before I left work. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 16, 2008 One liter swingtop vintage 2006, thanks CaptainCougar!. Pours clear dark brown with a dense beige head. Full sweet nose, with caramel, plums. Full sweet, creamy body, light carbonation. Your basic ’big and chewy malt-bomb.’ Taste of brown sugar, caramel, plums. Soft, lightly piney finish. A bit more bitter than its German cousins, but arguably more balanced for that reason. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Aug 6, 2008 2006 bottle. Dark brown with thick brown head. Evident oxidation dampens what might have been a rich malty nose. All that remains is soured fruits and memories of complex aromas. Soft mouthfeel. Heavily oxidized, sourness and pungent overripe orchard fruit. Wish I could try a fresh one because I love a damn good doppelbock.
