Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Merry Christmas to mee! Very dark brown, slight reddish hue. Nice foamy milk chocolaty brown head. Flavor of roasted malt and some light hops. Enough were used to create a perfect balance in this one! Very thick textured. Very special beer. I love it. I was to keep this one on hand all the time!

A very dark brown body with a good head. The aroma is toasted nuts, slightly roasty malts and a touch of corn. Malty body is fairly pleasant but forgettable.

Thanks to Cottrell for this one, made for a great doppelbock evening against Celebrator, Andechser, Maximator, Bajuvator, and Consecrator. The appearance was dark brown amber, tan head, porter-like appearance. There was lots of candy, light fruit aromas comign from the bottle and poured glasses, just pretty, although I was anticipating something sweet and sticky based on the aroma. Flavor was strong coffee for a doppelbock, licorice, dry-ness, hops to balance it out, almost schwarzbier-like, no breadiness, some spicey hops, the hops stick around in the after aftertaste, minutes after the last sip. Dry is the mouthfeel, very well attenuated lager, firm body, but again, lager-like. Enjoyable. These guys can brew good beers, no doubt.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark brown color beer with a huge brown foamy head with perfect retention. Aroma of roasted malt with some butterscotch. The roasted caramel malt with subtle hints of banana also dominates taste. Body is above average but could have been fuller and carbonation was at the right level for the style. Alcohol is well hidden. Overall, this is a very good beer but would have appreciated a bit more complexity (more chocolate, more banana).

2004 - Pours with a dark brown body topped by a thin head with little lacing. The aroma and flavor are sweet and malty with a slight roastiness, a little caramel and a touch of bitterness. Very nice. Medium to full bodied, smooth and a touch dry. 8/3/9/4/17 2005 - Pours with a cloudy dark brown body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is sour and funky with a slight malt note. The flavor is slightly sweet and malty with a touch of sourness and a very slight roastiness. Medium to full bodied, fizzy and a touch dry. 6/4/7/4/13

2006 bottle consumed in early 2008. Pours a very dark mahogany brown body. A small, foamy, light tan head settles quickly, leaving nothing but a small rim behind. Minimal traces of thin line lacing are scattered about the glass. The aroma shows dark and light chocolate varieties, as well as vanilla, cola, and some dry, woodsy notes. The flavor shows cocoa powder, dark chocolate, oak, and some dark fruits. Molasses and root beer come on pretty strong just prior to and during the finish. Medium bodied and well carbonated, despite it’s age. Pretty nice Doppelbock. I think my bottle might have been a little past its prime. I want to revisit this one.

1L bottle. poured dark brown with creamy tan head. nose has loads of nuts, plums, chocolate, caramel, and cookie, very nice. flavor proved similar to the nose and this was balanced perfectly. body is a tad thin, alcohol is well hidden. there really isn’t much i would change. this is the best doppelbock i’ve had so far and it caused other beer drinking friends to fight for the last drop. very well done.8/5/8/4/16................................... another sample from j_rob21. thanks. i still enjoy this beer a lot, and it tastes like no doppelbock i’ve ever had, perhaps it’s not to style but it’s too drinkable, refreshing, with wonderful mix of chocolate, nuts, and cookie to not love. i lowered overall by 1 point. man i love this beer.
