Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

1 Liter swing top bottled in 2004. This pours opaque black with an appropriately sized tan head. The aroma is malty with hints of dark fruits. The flavor is rich and full and a spicy smoky note makes this Doppelbock different from others I’ve had. I suppose I have been spoiled by drinking some outstanding homebrewed Doppelbocks which have all been superior to any commercial Doppelbock I’ve tried, but this is the best commercial brew of the style that I’ve had to date.

2004 vintage. Full, sweet, malty aroma, plenty of caramel and chocolate along with notes of date, raisin and faintly spicy hops. Deep mahogany color with a slight, fine light tan head. Flavor profile is satisfyingly malty and full, having copious amounts of sweetness and caramel complexity, some creaminess noted as well as some dark fruitiness, breadiness, nut and mild alcohol towards the finish. Some lingering licorice and cocoa. Exceedingly smooth palate with a medium-full body. Very nice and seemingly quite authentic.

One liter swingtop vintage 2006, thanks CaptainCougar!. Pours clear dark brown with a dense beige head. Full sweet nose, with caramel, plums. Full sweet, creamy body, light carbonation. Your basic ’big and chewy malt-bomb.’ Taste of brown sugar, caramel, plums. Soft, lightly piney finish. A bit more bitter than its German cousins, but arguably more balanced for that reason.

500 ml bottle via trade with CaptainCougar - Pours a brown color with a huge light tan head. Thick lacing. Aroma is light toasted malt and light esters. Flavor is very chocolatey with a touch of fruit in the finish. Palate is thick and so is the body. A roasted malt after taste lingers on the palate. A good beer. Thanks Tom.

Bottle: Very dark brown in color with an off white head. Aroma, roasted malts, caramel, brown sugar, some molasses, and some earthy notes. Very malt forward. Flavor, toasted malts, some caramel, molasses, roasted notes, a bit nutty, and a slight smokiness. Very smooth, easy drinking, good stuff.

Bottle shared by Thickfreakness. Thanks dude!
Pours a clearish dark brown color with a very light head that dissipates quickly. Smell is tart, toasty caramel and bordering on almost soy sauce malt. Taste is the same and is pretty smooth and mild. Slightly sweet caramel soy sauce flavor. Nice, but not as great as I thought it was going to be.

Nice clean dark brown/red pour with a fluffy off white head and lace. An aroma of roasted malt and light brown sugar. A flavor that is dominated maltiness, caramel and abv. A decent finishing bitter that is very nice. Palate is almost foamy but not. Overall a very solid beer that I truly enjoy
