Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

2006 bottle which I got from Jacob probably in 2006. I have been looking for a reason for a long time to open this bottle, and finally I got around to it. Pours out a very dark brown color with a perfect fat brown head on it. Smell is full of roasted malts, caramel, hops, some alcohol, and nuts. Taste is very smooth and almost refreshing which is strange for a doppelbock. Sweet yet not too sweet with a big flavor of chocolate and roasted malts. Drinks almost like a stout. Really good beer, probably my favorite beer of the weekend.

Pours with a five-finger light tan head, fades slowly and leaves some lace. Black color. Light carbonation and heavy bodied. Nose is roasted coffee. Taste is more like a porter/stout, some sweetness, slight hints of alcohol in aftertaste. Very different dopplebock but its good. $8.75 for a 1000ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

1L swingtop bottle: 05 vintage, courtesy of swededog awhile back. Pours a large brown head that settles into a thin covering on top of a clear amber hued brew. Retention is good. Mildly sweet malt nose, honey with a faint fruitiness and a light mustiness. Body is med/full, lightly oily and a bit grainy. Medium sweet malts, chocolate, honey, raisin and licorice. Finish is medium sweet with a touch of roast. Thanks Jeff!

once again, thanks to mr. clarkw for this beer.the liborator poured a dark brown (and dark red when held to light) with a creamy off-white head.the aroma was again, very musty and earthy.the flavor was nice and smooth with some caramel, smoke, and a hint of metal at the end.this was a little better than the impy porter if ya ask me.

500 ml bottle thanks to Cletus. Pours a very dark brown color with a small white head. The aroma is nutty, some roasted malts and caramel. The flavor was lots of caramel, toasted malts, and was dominated by a sour almost fruity flavor. I’ve heard this beer is sometimes off, and the strong sour flavor with a hint of soy sauce might point toward oxidation or some type of off flavors. Not bad, but the sourness is unusual and unwanted. Some tobacco and meaty flavors also.

Draft. Dark brown pour with light head. Strong roasted malt aroma that is sweet and rather inviting. Sweet grainy taste with plenty of roasted malts. The best doppelbock I’ve tried, although I’ve never been tremendously big on the style.

Shared during some monday night football with curly, scottyp, and barrios. 2006 bottle, possibly not stored well before I purchased it. Pours a very dark purplish brown with ring of tan head. Nose is almost offensive antiseptic at first, but as it warms, becomes more like raisin and alcohol. Flavor starts with a smokey note, has plum, molassis, soy. Not my favorite dopplebock, and a bit overrate imo
