Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Bottle. Opend with a loud pop(I like that!). Poured a dark brown body with nice size head. Great aroma. Malt, candied sugar, raisins, plums, tart cherries, caramel, chocolate. Flavor was all the above with a extremely well balanced, mildly carbonated dopplebock. This was just fantastic and reminded me that I need to drink more Dopplebock. Not to self: get more Thomas Hooker Liberator Doppelbock!

500 ml bottle thanks to Cletus. Pours a very dark brown color with a small white head. The aroma is nutty, some roasted malts and caramel. The flavor was lots of caramel, toasted malts, and was dominated by a sour almost fruity flavor. I’ve heard this beer is sometimes off, and the strong sour flavor with a hint of soy sauce might point toward oxidation or some type of off flavors. Not bad, but the sourness is unusual and unwanted. Some tobacco and meaty flavors also.

Bottle courtesy of dogfish120love – thanks! Pours a murky brown with a one finger tan head that leaves light lacing. The nose is molasses, dark fruit, caramel malt and light alcohol. The taste is dark chocolate, burnt malt, toasted barley and bitter hoppy coffee in the finish. Medium creamy body. Very good Dopplebock.

From a 1 liter swing top brown bottle, 2006 vintage, served at cellar temperature. Made a very good good appearance, poured a opaque red hued dark chocolate brown with a large fluffy, rocky, foamy tan head that slowly settled into a rocky, foamy, creamy lacing with a small amount of sticking, good carbonation. Had a big toasted dark malty nose with bare hints of charcoal, caramelized malts. A crisp, malt textured and creamy smooth medium bodied mouth feel, exceptional drinkability. Roasted and toasted malt taste, complex in it’s structure, caramelize malts and burnt chocolate, a great delicious crispiness from the malts, a herbal bite towards the end and a dry roasted and toasted malty finish. What more can be said, a great doppelbock, a must try.

Bottle Poured a clear dark ruby brown with creamy light tan head and very nice fine lacing. Aromas were of molassas, chocolate and grapes. Light hops notes and a well hidden alcohol smell. Flaovrs of boubon, oak barrels and lots of dark malts. Smooth creamy almost oily feel. Carbonation was soft and the finish was a bit astringent.

bottle by way of dogfish120love... age is unknown.

dark brown coffee colored pour with a dirty white head. lots of spotty lacing is left as it retreats into the glass.

the aroma is quite sweet and reminiscent of a baltic porter... molasses, lots of nice toasty grain, caramel, skunky/noble hoppiness, chocolate, mild coffee nuttiness and raisins (gold and black).

the palate is nowhere near sweet as the aroma lead me to believe...luckily. flavors of coffee, caramel, nearly burned sugar, toasted nuts, burned raisins, ample grain and a lightly bitter dry finish. pumpkin pie spiciness (clove especially), coffee and skunky hops (spent coffee oil?) find their way into the aftertaste. the body is medium to full with a very soft creamy texture. the mouth feel is insanely light and airy. 8/5/9/4/18/4.4
