Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

1 L bottle sampled thanks to drewbeerme. Pours a brown black with an off white head and patch lacing. Dopple aroma malt, bakers chocolate, brown sugar, fruit. Malty sweet flavors more bakers chocolate and hints of fruit. Not too sweet or too dry, balanced well to make an excellent beer.

500 ml swing top bottle. Pours a very dark brown, bordering on black color, with a massive creamy beige head. Malty aroma with hints of cream, raisins, plums, prunes and chocolate. Taste is dark fruity with hints of raisins, plums, prunes, caramel and chocolate. Malty finish. Nice.

Bottle, from Manchester Wine & Liquor. Good nose, Sweet. Cocoa, carmel, little egg or stale scent. Clean reddish dark brown color, Nice head that faded at a moderate pace, that reduced to a ring. Though a more hastily secong pouring created a big fluffy head. Malty bitter flavors, coffee, baking chocolate. Little metal, steel, thing.Medium body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Very tasty. Paul Davis does it again.

Thansk to Jrob, finally got to try this,Aroma was german malts and hints of dark chocolate, dark fruit ,and a tidbit of licorice, huge lager head, fantastic big body with a quick impression of chewy ,slightly sweet choccolate, which smoothed out to a simple malty dryer taste, that aftertaste was wonderful, the mouthfeel was ancredible,a smooth caramel with the liveliness of a lager. Different then Celebrator, but just as good

Vintage 2006. Pour of a deep chestnut and burgundy hue, topped with an abundant, thinly textured foam of light tan. Aroma traverses a diverse and complicated terrain; the first is full of minerals and crisp bitterness, showing juniper berries, basil, spruce, and aluminum. Misplaced and clumsy. Second, a warm wave of apricot jam on cinnamon French toast, green apples, pear, raisins, and banana, maple syrup and vanilla dipped. Vinegar and garlic clove sweetness precede a final and lasting swell of pineapple rind that brushes aside the hosewater bitterness of the initial impression. Flavor is much simpler, very doughy and dense, with lots of caramel, baker’s chocolate, and dark fruit; lightly acidic with hints of red grape, tart baked apple and lingonberry. The residual impact of that mineral and cleaning product character of the initial aroma is resigned but still present, giving a muted, grating metallic bitterness. Candy sugar and fig. Palate is very creamy and soft; medium to full in body and very sweet. Finishes with raw walnuts and hazelnuts, drying out completely and showing some licorice. Rich and complex, this one is packed with nuances, most of which are interesting and satiating for cold weather purposes, although those greenish moments of synthetic bitterness are too nagging throughout for this to be a top-tier example. Thanks Jason!

1 Liter Swing-top Bomber: First off, the bottle is superb. When you pour this one it is an opaque brown color. There is a bit of a tan head. Decent lacing. The first thing that hits the nose is some roastiness: I didn't expect this much in a doppelbock. There is sweetness in the nose also. Caramel, fruits, and maybe a hint of smokiness? The flavor is rich and full. The roastiness is there, but there is a ton of other flavors in here. Complex and extremely tasty. Their beers just keep on getting better with each release.
