Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Purchased a while back from Castle in Westport Conn. I was very excited for this sucker. Detailed malt flavor, rich long finish. Was an impressive beer, very nice representation of the style.

Bottle shared by Sparky27. THANKS ERIC!!! Been wanting to try this one for a while now. Mississippi mud meets Sedona Oak Creek clay in color with a nice latte head. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel, and molasses; although those same adjectives are much bolder on the tongue than in the nose. Honey, buttermilk biscuit, and maple syrup also evident. Creamy mouthfeel. Pretty damn good!!!

Swingtop bottle. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized foamy beige head. The aroma has ample amounts of sweet malts (caramel, chocolate) and fruits with touches of bready yeast. The flavor has sweet bready malts, fruits, chocolate, and is slightly nutty. Medium bodied and very smooth. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Swing top bottle, thanks Brian (dogfish120love) Super dense red/brown color with a thin off-white. Aroma of dark fruits, a toasty, caramely, very pleasant. Interesting flavor, very low carbonation to start, more dark fruits, raisins, figs maybe, not bad.

Thank you to DYIsoccer- for bring this down to SD> I am going to rate the newsest vintage. I gave the 2004 a 7/5/8/4/17----- 2005---- Poursa cloudy brown hue with a small head. Aromas of cocoa a hint of coffee with a slight sour funk and a light bittering in the nose. Flavors of cocoa, caramel, with a mellow finish, but still seems overcloying. Very different than the 04 and should have it’s own seperate rating.

500ml bottle via summer07 secret santa, (thanks!). Pours a dark brown/almost black with a nice tan head. Nose is plums and apricots. Taste is chocolate, nuts, berries, roasted barley, and earthy piny hops. Ashy burnt astringent aftertaste. Body is medium, carbonation is medium/moderate. This is not bad, but does not seem true to style, and a bit too astringent in the finish/aftertaste which is likely due to using too much burnt malt (perhaps black patent?).

Dark brown pour with cherry wood hues, fully diminishing tan head, light lacing. Aroma is sweet cherries, caramel malt, chocolate, lesser molasses, brown sugar and anise. Flavor is more of the same without the anise component. Palate is generous, full and velvety for a bock beer. Finishes with a touch of creamy sweet malt and smoke. Pretty good, had hoped for a lot more.
