Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Bottle from Capones. Thanks Stegosaurus. Sampled with Dennis Bell. I don’t think it lives up to it’s 3.9 avg rating. Celebrator is so much better. This was good but a little thin in body and not much charecteristic. It just didn’t wow me !

Weird taste of tarragon and dill, this is one of the more unusual bocks I have tried. It certainly has its roasty malty moments, but I will remember it for its pot-roast spices.

From Cletus via trade. Pour was dark brown with ruby highlights and a short off-white head that didn’t produce lacing. Aroma and flavor were sour. Bottle was infected. Will need to get another bottle and try this again.

(Bottle). Roasty, fruity aroma. Garnet red in color with a thick light tan head. Sweet and roasty malt flavor, also some fruit. (I don’t get any chocolate.) The finish is substantial, somewhat bitter. Overall, there’s balance and lots of complexity, definitely letting you know you are drinking a serious and quality brew.

Bottle aquired through trade with cletus. Thanks John! Pours brown with a small tan head. Aroma of dough, toffee, booze, scotch, mold, dirt. Flavor is chocolate, doughy malts, roast, scotch. Nice! Really nice beer. Some weird doughy esters in teh aroma but the flavor was exceptional. Great beer!

500 ml swingtop bottle courtesy of cletus. Thanks John. Pours an opaque brown color with a small tan head that quickly dissipates. The aroma is distinct with prunes, cola, and dark roasted malts. The flavor is similar with plenty of molasses supported by dark fruits, cola and roasted malts. The palate was slightly oily with very soft carbonation. The finish was long with strong molasses lingering. Overall: I loved the taste of this dopplebock, but the oily mouthfeel was a bit of a distraction.

Thanks to warriorsoul for this 1 Liter fliptop... 2005 edition Appears a dark mahogany, bordering black with a 1 finger, creamy tan head. Lots of streaky lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of roasted nuts, toffee, caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, and cocoa. Taste is of the same aromas but perhaps toned down slightly from the anticipated goodness that was expected. It’s good but not the best of the style by a long shot. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly astringent, along with moderate smoothness, cream, and sugar. I’ll be sure to check out this years version soon enough.

Poured from bottle at VT Brewers Fest - Poured a dark red color with a light tan head. Aroma was of malt dark fruit. Flavor was complex mix of heavy malt, fruit, vanilla and some smokiness. Finish was slightly sweet with some hop bitterness. Very nice!
