Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Deep brown appearance with a tan head. Spicy dark fruit and brown sugar aroma and flavor, a little bit of a bite throughout the drink. Medium-thick texture, with (I think it's the yeast) a strong, pasty stinging, spicy quality.

Dark chestnut brown with a monstrous lasting tan head. Hearty malt aroma. Lots of malt depth to this one. Peat, light licorice, malt, caramel, pale malt, mocha, light roasted malt, hints of vine ripened fruit, and did I mention malt. LIght malt sweetness in the start which gains momentum and with toasted malts, light tar, touch of black malt and earth. Some woodiness as it warms. Seems to get thicker and richer as it warms. Very smooth and deceptive brew. Coffee linger. If anything a touch too much in the dark malts, but I like the mix. Thanks Slikwily!

2004: Dark mahogany color, opaque tan creamy head; retentive yet fizzy, small lacing. Nose is so malty with notes of fig, bread, smoke, port, baker’s chocolate. Caramel and toffee, yams, molasses, cherry, licorice. Taste is creamy, smooth, very malty but subtle and drinkable. Very balanced lager, I liked this one. Thanks Sham and DYCSoccer.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted caramel malty aroma. Medium to heavy body. Medium to heavy roasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer that is excellent for style

JJpm74 was kind enough to send me both the 2005 and 2006 versions of this, and they need to be split out, because they are different beers entirely. Having said that, I’ll be rating the 2006 version. The pour was deep brown/black with a nice 3-finger brown head. The aroma was very roasty, caramelly malty, with a lot of dark fruit, some cabernet, and a nice perfumy floral hop component. The flavor was roasty malty, with a creamy mouthfeel, and a lot of nuts, figs, brown sugar, and chocolate syrup. The palate is velvety, smooth, complex, and chocolate syrupy as it warms. Nicely done, and another elite beer from this elite brewer.

Dark brown, opaque beer with a thin moka head. Sweet prunes in aroma and brown sugar. In mouth, sweet maple with nuts and prunes, llight hops in beginning, and smooth alcohol final. Rich bodied db, with alcohol warming you. Enjoyed at YEHa!05 Christmas Party on Dec. 17th, 2005.

2004 bottle, 1 liter. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, fully diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly yeasty (sweat, dough), with a light note of brown sugar. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic, slightly metallic. A big let-down based on its Top 50 status. Not a bad beer, mind you, just lackluster for the style...light and simple aroma with some rather unpleasant raw yeast character, adequate flavor balance but not all that clean.

omhper in Montreal #18 (with MartinT,tiggmtl,Rastacouere,DYCSoccer). 1 liter swing-top bottle. Dark, thick chocolate body with a slight head...chocolate caky nose with slight hoppiness, primarily quite sweet...in the mouth, this really explodes, wonderfully rich, creamy with vanilla hints, late warming brandy character, earthy and dense but not flatfooted or heavy...great stuff, a top 5 doppel for me and probably the best of show from this great tasting. Thanks so much Casey!
