Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Bottled. Pours a nice dark black w/a smallish not insubstantial head. NIce classic malty-choco-bread doppelbock aroma. Taste is nice and malty with a bitter kick at the end. Worth your while.

Big 1 liter bottle with a ceramic swing top was an imposing sight. The top came out with a nice popping sound effect, and the beer was poured into the goblet. The color was dark reddish black with an inner glow that exuded charm. The head was small and fleeting, and the lace was minimal. The aroma was sweet and roasty malt that gave off delicate fig, and chocolate notes. The hops had that distinctly Germanic grassy tone to them. The taste was sweet and malty, like a dopplebock should be. There were raisin, fig, apple, and toffee flavors to be enjoyed here. There was also an earthy herbal spiciness to the hops. Creamy and dry at the same time, the mouthfeel was enticing and the drinkability was enormous. This was a very beautiful part of a package that came to me from mikeys01 of beeradvocate.

2006 500ml swing top bottle. Pours a deep dark brown with a small tan head. Nose is molasses & brown sugar. Palate is smooth, sweet & lightly carbonated. Flavor is a sweet mix of the aforementioned brown sugar, molasses, toffee & a ton of malt. This was a sweet, wonderful brew.

2006 Bottle: I very ,uch enjoyed this brew. It had a deep dark red color, wth a brown stiff head. Agree that the aroma was of grampes/wine. The flavor was a bit raisiny, brown sugar, molasas, red fruits, etc. A very smooth beer, I really liked it.

500ml bottle from MrBendo. 2006 bottle. Aroma: Deep and rich maltiness that’s heavy on the caramel. Toasted nuts, jam-like grapiness, dark chocolate. Yeast steps out more as it warms. Appearance: Dark brown with small reddish highlights. Light tan head was full and foamy with great retention. Great lacing. Flavor: Rich german maltiness, deep caramel, toasted bread, light smoke and chocolate, Grape jelly. Getting a noticeable amount of hop flavor towards the finish. Hop bitterness also seems a bit on the high side for the style. Sweet finish. Palate: Full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Light alcohol warming in back of mouth. Overall: This was a nice beer, but the hop flavor and bitterness was distracting to me. Tone it down, and this would be much better.
