The aroma was light molasses with some chocolate and whiskey. Nice nose. The taste had chocolate, light apples and roasted apple core. There was also bread and maybe a hint of cinnamon. The smooth mouthfeel was impressive. This is obviously a quality brew. I may like it even more if I get to try this one again. One of the better dopples I have tried. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Opaque brown with tan head that recedes to cover. Chalky, roasty chocolate flavour with some floral hops. Fairly simple. Bottle enjoyed with DYCSoccer17, MartinT, muzzlehatch, Omhper and Rastacouere. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 25, 2004 Thanks to TAR for the tasting: Nearly opaque with ruby highlights, very good head and good lace. The aroma has notes of sweet and burnt malts, smoke, mocha, prune, aromatic hops, twangy yeast esters, and a touch of salt. The taste starts acdic and lactic which keeps the malty sweetness in check. A fruity midsection opens up into a dry and woody finish. Lingering nutty character. The feel starts lush but then the acidic nature thins the palate. A very good example of the genre, recommended. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 29, 2005 2005 1L bottle courtesy of Swededog! Poured a very deep ruby/brown with a thick initial layer of caramel head.... receded almost completely after a few minutes. Rich roasted malts provided the bulk of the aroma, with coffee, dark fruits (raisins and figs), baker’s chocolate, caramel, and some citrus Pac NW hoppage. Medium-full bodied on the palate, and creamy, yet there was a well-balanced bitter component from the hops. Just fantastic mouthfeel and flavor development. Flavors were of roasted bittersweet chocolate, raisins, fresh roasted coffee, caramel, light citrus, and some cherry tartness. Flavor was just awesomely deep and complex. Really couldn’t find any flaws in this one! goldtwins (4085), Nesconset, New York, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 4, 2005 Side-by-side reviews of the 2004 and 2005, thanks to Casey (DYCSoccer17) sharing. I liked the 2005 better, and its qualities may be entirely attruibuted to freshness, bolder flavour, bitterness, tabacco, cocoa creaminess, bigger head. A joy. The 2004 was more of a malt experience, with generous chocolate malts and a barleywine taste, little hops, slightly oxidized which others may enjoy. My rating is based on the higher 2005.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 17, 2007 Bottle (500ml - swing-top bottled in 2006). Shared with blankboy, biegaman and tupalev - biegaman’s bottle. Clear deep ruby-brown, small frothy-bubbly off-white head. Nutty roast malt, herbal hops, mild alcohol - nice. Lactic taste, roast malt, wine grapes, grapeseed bitterness, pleasing. A little thin, sour and mildly acidic, bitter linger. Nice, but I’m not blown away. Rciesla (3880), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA

Chocolate and berry notes, raspberries and some light apple notes, with a caramel sweetness, light smoke notes. Chewy body with a mild fruit etoh warming. Surely a pinnacle doppelbock.
