Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Dark red color with a smallish head. Aroma mostly malt with some dried fruits. Taste is big. First there’s molasses and chocolate. Also notes of vanilla, oak and alcohol. A lot going on here. Not as sweet as the description but full bodied.

Bottle at Immy’s Tasting on 7-22-06. Dark brown. Nose is caramel, sweet malts, and is sort of smoky. Taste is malty, bittersweet, caramel, cocoa and light alcohol. Dark chocolate as well in this. Body is creamy and medium. Finishes with bittersweet chocolate, cocoa, smoky malts and light bitterness.

Very lightly hopped. A fairly thick beer; it has a standard bock aroma of carmel. Sweet. Heavy palate, and a good bock. But I am surprised to see it rated as highly as it is.

Bottle. Cherry, prune, malt, and a rum-like alcohol aroma. Ruby brown with small head. Sweet prune/dried cherry aroma with a moderate hops and alcohol burn to finish. Nice dopplebock - smoother than typical.

Clear dark brown pour with ruby highlights and a thin tan head. Superb aroma of rich, roasted malt and chocolate. Excellent flavor of rich, roasted malt, chocolate and fruits with a bitter finish. The body is full with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation.

Bottle thanks to zathrus13. I guess dopplebocks are not my style. Pours with a thin collection of large, light brown bubbles atop a nearly black, dark brown body. Good lacing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, light soy sauce, toasted malts, light bread yeast, and nuts. Taste is strong with astringent caramel (like the sauce you put on flan), with nuts, followed by soy. Creamyish mouthfeel, light bubbles.

Thanks to cmaruschak for sharing. Dark brown (almost black) color with a thin dark beige head that diminishes slowly. Thin film of lacing. Strong roasted aroma bursts through immediately, with a touch of malt underneath. Rich body and more bitter and roasty than expected. However it smooths out pretty quickly. Flavors of roasted malt, coffee and a touch of spice and hops. The finish is tasty with an array of hops, spice and nuts. Really this Doppelbock is on the other end of the spectrum from the smoother and creamier types, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Dark mahogany body topped by a long-lasting medium tan head. Very creamy body with small and soft bubbles. Flavours of earthy caramel and soft molasses poured over berries and raisins. Overall pancake feeling. The fresh leafy hops work very well with the rest of the beer. I expected an intense heavy beer but I got the exact opposite. Complex and subtle soft flavours. I liked it a lot. The top of the Thomas Hooker line-up. My friends look at me funny when I tell them that I treated myself with a high-end Hooker and it was worth it.
