Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Thanks to boboski for opening this brew from one of those cool looking flip top liter bottles. Pours a nice dark brown cup o’ coffee with off white head. Wow! This has an amazing initial mouth watering lip smackin’ aroma with roasty malts, rich molasses, brewing pre hoped wort percolating over the flame and caramel. In time the aroma did subside in intensity but was still very nice. The flavors were roasty to slightly burnt malts, rich molasses, caramel candy, nice chunk of pale maltiness. Then I get a chocolate maltiness and hints of coffee. Very nice.

Thanks to Zathrus for this brew. Pours dark ebony with a smooth beige head. Rich and a soft roast flavor, hints of smoked malts, dark chocolate, and some dark fruit notes. Very smooth palate with some earthy notes in the finish.

Very dark brown with a tan head. Sweet nose with a little yeast funk. Palate was chewy and thickish with a creamy carbonation. Hint of sour milk. Noticeable yeast notes, but they didn’t seem very complex. Very roasty. Tasty notes of sweet chocolate. Healthy bitterness (flowers) in the finish. All right, but not as good as I expected.

From Immy’s Tasting. Hazy dark mohogany color with a medium creamy light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt. Flavor of dark roasted malt.

2006 bottle. Dark brown with thick brown head. Evident oxidation dampens what might have been a rich malty nose. All that remains is soured fruits and memories of complex aromas. Soft mouthfeel. Heavily oxidized, sourness and pungent overripe orchard fruit. Wish I could try a fresh one because I love a damn good doppelbock.

Draught at TND: Aroma of fruit, cherries, malts, light cocoa, and light caramel. Poured black/deep ruby in color with a medium-sized, light brown head that lasted throughout. Clear. Not sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of cherry, chocolate, malts, light cream, and a hint of alcohol. Full body. Viscous, sticky texture. Soft carbonation. Rich, creamy, chocolate finish is a bit sticky. I was surprisingly impressed. 8%ABV is barely noticeable.

Wonderful 1L bottle with a swingtop--I love it. Brown with red in the light; loose off-white head. Mixed palate, not exactly frothy but a fair degree of carbonation. Slight coffee note, rich chocolatey finish lingers with a hoppy and surprisingly dry note. A frothy porter, essentially. Quite good but not the equivalent of Celebrator and I may even prefer Salvator in my opinion.

Thick and black, with a nice beige head. Honey on toast aroma. Very full bodoed - seems very nourishing and satisfying. Flavors of oats and and bread and honey, with subtle hints of balsamic vinegar (in a good way, trust me). As it warms, notes of Chocolate and vanilla assert themselves. Very much a meal in a bottle. Thanks to Springslicker for this one!
