Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

From Immy’s Tasting. Hazy dark mohogany color with a medium creamy light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt. Flavor of dark roasted malt.

The aroma is sweet and malty with alcohol, chocolate, and dark fruit. The appearance is red brown with a nice head. The flavor is astringent and the alcohol is not hidden at all but it does taste like the aroma. The palate is average for the style. The finish is soapy. Overall not the best that I have had.

[tap at Spuyten Duyvil] It’s nice to see this brewery is finally in the NY market, and this was quite a nice introduction - smooth, creamy and full-bodied - a nice, floral/spicy quality, coupled with a pleasant caramel/munich malt sweetness made this a pleasure to drink - welcome to NY Thomas Hooker!

Bottle. Reddish dark brown colour with a light light fizzy head. Aroma of fruitness and very little maltness. Flavour of malt, sweetness and very tasty of caramel and toffee. Ends up very unclassic

I may under-rate this one a bit because the Arctic Devil preceeded it. Dark, grainy aroma. Strong grain presesnce. Moderately sweet. A bit buzzy. Musty at times. Some off aromas. Would age well. Mellow, grassy, grainy.

Bottle: Chocolate brown, very dark, huge rocky light brown head, web like lacing.   Slight sweet & sour nose, subtle breadiness, cereal, pale cocoa.   Much more bready on the tongue, slight dark pitted fruit, and oddly enough, a sort of belgian yeast like quality.   Mouthfeel is slightly airy, body is moderate.   Soft hop finish, subtle sourness in the back, the breadiness has disipated for the most part.   A real odd duck, its like a lager with ale yeast or something.   Definitely not as heavy as other examples, which I like.   But at the same time, it doesn’t seem all that lagerish, at least to me.   Good albeit a little different.   Thanks John!

Dark brown bodied with a foamy light brown head. Sweet and alcoholic aroma with notes of pilsener malt and toffee - lacks the fullness of the best German Doppelbocks! Flavor is sweet malty, brown sugary and grassy and is more like a brown ale than a doppelbock. Long sweet finish. Good taste but rather ordinary and way overrated imo.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, biegaman, and blankboy, courtesy of beigaman. Aroma is quite mild - some roast. Dark brown, no head. Good taste - roast, sweetness, and some hops. Thin, a little sourness in finish. Only ok.
