Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

This was great. Liter swing top botte, chocolate and dark fruits, I enjoyed this alot. The 8% was well hidden, and get your hands on this one.

2005 bottle. Aroma starts with a quick burst of coffee and chocolate. It’s a bit metallic, too, which was unexpected. Very dark brown with a good head and lacing. Flavor was very well balanced with roasted malts, breadiness, nuttiness and some piney hops. The hops left the finish dry and a bit bitter, but not too much so. Pretty good.

Pours dark brown with a dark head. Aroma is caramel, coffee and a touch of bread. Flavor is much like the nose, but more roasted flavors are present. Just the right amount of hop bitterness rounds out the flavor nicely. A roasted almost smoky flavor lingers. Really good.

Poured deep ruby with a thick tan head. Good retention. Aroma had hints of chocolate malts, coffee, raisin, currant and grain. This tasted like a Porter to me at first and then became more like a Doppelbock as it sat. When I paired food with it the flavors became much more present. Overall a very good American made Doppelbock.

Re-rate of the 2004 bottle: Pours brown with a generous lasting tannish head. Aromas of strawberries, bananas, and yogurt. Taste is very nutty in the best way possible with some great allspice notes. Slightly alcoholic on the finish. Damn, this is one hell of a brew!

2006 Bottle sampled 4/12/06:

Smells nutty and malty with some molasses. Tastes roasty with some nice chocolatey elements and some mellow bittering hops. Some coffee elements present. Finishes tingly but not quite as buttery as the 2004 and 2005 bottlings.

1L bottle. poured dark brown with creamy tan head. nose has loads of nuts, plums, chocolate, caramel, and cookie, very nice. flavor proved similar to the nose and this was balanced perfectly. body is a tad thin, alcohol is well hidden. there really isn’t much i would change. this is the best doppelbock i’ve had so far and it caused other beer drinking friends to fight for the last drop. very well done.8/5/8/4/16................................... another sample from j_rob21. thanks. i still enjoy this beer a lot, and it tastes like no doppelbock i’ve ever had, perhaps it’s not to style but it’s too drinkable, refreshing, with wonderful mix of chocolate, nuts, and cookie to not love. i lowered overall by 1 point. man i love this beer.

Dark brown/black. Medium sized, frothy, tan/light brown head. Roasty caramel/toffee, biscuity malt, bittersweet chocoffee, and subtle dark fruits. Full body, smooth. Excellent doppelbock.

Dark mahogany body topped by a long-lasting medium tan head. Very creamy body with small and soft bubbles. Flavours of earthy caramel and soft molasses poured over berries and raisins. Overall pancake feeling. The fresh leafy hops work very well with the rest of the beer. I expected an intense heavy beer but I got the exact opposite. Complex and subtle soft flavours. I liked it a lot. The top of the Thomas Hooker line-up. My friends look at me funny when I tell them that I treated myself with a high-end Hooker and it was worth it.
