Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Pours a deep mahogany brown with a nice beige head. Aroma is very malty, bready, munich, vienna, toasted malts, some chocolate and toffee, with some fruitiness as well. Flaovr is loaded with caramunich malts and some chocolate, and finished off with a little bitterness, but mostly sweet. Definitely worthy of being grouped with the best doppelbocks in the world. Its hard to say if there is a better example made in the US.

Dark brown and red body with a thin light brown head. The aroma was light molasses with some chocolate and whiskey. Nice nose. The taste had chocolate, light apples and roasted apple core. There was also bread and maybe a hint of cinnamon. The smooth mouthfeel was impressive. This is obviously a quality brew. I may like it even more if I get to try this one again. One of the better dopples I have tried.

Bottle at Immy’s Tasting on 7-22-06. Dark brown. Nose is caramel, sweet malts, and is sort of smoky. Taste is malty, bittersweet, caramel, cocoa and light alcohol. Dark chocolate as well in this. Body is creamy and medium. Finishes with bittersweet chocolate, cocoa, smoky malts and light bitterness.

Poured a deep reddish-brown with a tan head which had minimal lacing. Aroma was a wicked mix of smoke, roasted coffee, and bread. Flavor was similar but was complemented by a subtle nuttiness in the dry finish. Certainly a creamy finish.

Very dark mahogny/brown with a tannish creamy head and spots of lace. Mellow aromas of caramel and roast. Raisins and spice as well, though I’m unsure of what spice I’m smelling. Wet malts with a nutty or woody touch. Some hints of chocolate, maybe. The earthy qualities come out in the flavors. Bitter hops with a strong malt backing. Bready almost. Alcohol is apparent. Bitter tail that’s tingly on the tongue. Malty, dry finish. Thanks Casey!

Deep brown appearance with a tan head. Spicy dark fruit and brown sugar aroma and flavor, a little bit of a bite throughout the drink. Medium-thick texture, with (I think it's the yeast) a strong, pasty stinging, spicy quality.

I believe Jasonmech sent me this. I’ve had it before, but I was always a bit tipsy so never rated it. Good to finally get a bottle to have to myself. 2006 flip top 500 ml.
Has a fairly strong chocolate/cocoa aroma along with a touch of caramel and dark fruit. The body is quite dark, brown but approaching black and the tan head diminishes rapidly from it’s initial thumb thick size. Very smooth and round on the first sip. Quite malty with lots of cramel fruit and some very faint X-mas-beer like spice. Finish is roasted/toasted grains and caramel sweetness. Very nice brew.
