Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Sentimental cherries and their subtle tartness waltz with the able roasty and earthy malt...Green hop bitterness lingers and dethrones the sedentary malt from its ruling position...A smidge of alcohol seduces the palate but is disconcerted by some cocoa sedimentation...Were the malt more spirited and less roasty, this would be a world-class doppelbock in my book...

Bottled: Since I got my package from egajdzis, I’ve been looking forward to this. Thanks for trading, Eric. Pours a dark amber light dusty colour under a huge light chocolate brown head. Really nearly perfect to look at. Berries, fruit, light yeast and malt in the nose. Flavour is fruity, maltish and has light cocoanotes. Has a pleasant fruitbitterness in the end. Quite good beer, but not in the same class as the great german doppelbocks.

bottle. dark brown caramel body with a small off-white head. the aroma is pleasant with notes of butterscotch, caramel, sugar, plenty of yeast, and a touch of alcohol. the flavour consist of chocolate and is somewhat sugary at times...also some toasted grain. very flavourful and interesting. the alcohol made an appearance briefly too. nice stuff.

(750ml bottle) Sampled at TiggMTL’s Montreal Crew YEHa!05 Christmas Party on December 17, 2005. Finally - a Connecticut beer! Pours a thin, beige head with a deep brown body. Nose is very boozy and figs. The flavour was boozy as well with tones of coffee and brandy. Nice stuff.

Bottle, from Manchester Wine & Liquor. Good nose, Sweet. Cocoa, carmel, little egg or stale scent. Clean reddish dark brown color, Nice head that faded at a moderate pace, that reduced to a ring. Though a more hastily secong pouring created a big fluffy head. Malty bitter flavors, coffee, baking chocolate. Little metal, steel, thing.Medium body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Very tasty. Paul Davis does it again.

on tap at the Gate, Brooklyn. dark cherry/mohagany brown color, a little reddish golden at edges. short thin creamy dark tan head. aroma of licorice, strong malt, bitter molasses. flavor is a little different than others of this style - a little peaty and earthy dryish malt, more dry licorice root and bitter molasses. kind of like a dark german wheat or pumpernickel bread. some sweet malty notes there but mostly through roasted malt flavors. a bit of distilled wood. pleasantly unique, but not my favorite doppelbock.
