Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

sitting at my favortie brewery(kuhnhenns) with other ratebeerians, wohlfs, scroff, styles, llgrgg, flemdawg and eyedrinkale. thanks go to wohlfs for this one. poured a nice mahogany, with a off whir head. aroma malts, caramel, cherries, chocolate, dark fruits. flavor malts, chocolate, cherries, and other dark fruits, a little on the watery side but a good beer.

Thanks to jjpm74 for this wonderful hookup. 04 vintage. Dark brown pour with medium off white head. Caramel and malts make their presence known right away in the aroma. Chocolate and caramel make up the most of this dessert substitute of a beer, with some slight nut, toffee, and dark fruit adding into the mix. Well made, neat bottle, overall solid brew.

Julios Spring Beer Festival. Pour of slightly murkied medium nut brown, with ruddy fringes. Light fragrant gentle aroma of red plums and sweet melons. Rich and warmingly alcoholic taste of sweet brown sugar and a touch of almond paste. The malty crispness bellows through the light floral fruits and shows a rearing head of nipping alcohols. One lick from a good chocolate bar. A touch of euro hops round out for good balance. Well done.

Sample at Julio’s beer festival: Dark brown body. Malt dominated with chocolate and caramel. Lingering finish on the tongue. Nice, first one of the day and probably the best.

Pours a deep brown with a slight off white head. Aroma is malty, brown sugar, and some roasted malts. Flavor is malty, and some roasted malts.

Bottle. Pours deep mahogany with dense beige head. The aroma is clean and malty with some cream and some roasty notes. The flavor is slightly alcoholic with roasted malt, vanilla bean, and burned coffee. Pretty good.

Dark brown pour with cherry wood hues, fully diminishing tan head, light lacing. Aroma is sweet cherries, caramel malt, chocolate, lesser molasses, brown sugar and anise. Flavor is more of the same without the anise component. Palate is generous, full and velvety for a bock beer. Finishes with a touch of creamy sweet malt and smoke. Pretty good, had hoped for a lot more.

Tasting at Immy’s. From large swing top bottle. Dark ruby pour with creamy brown head. Nose is roasted caramel. Flavor largely the same. Another good large Hooker beer.
