Commercial Description:
The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover's dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

Bottled in 2006, flip top exploded off the bottle and breaded malt filled the room. Pours dark dark brown, almost black with a huge off-white rocky head. Oh, this is good, sweet, rich and creamy. No oxidation, This brew is up there with celebrator. Toffee, chocolate, and roasted malts dominate. Very smooth and drinkable the alcohol is well hidden. Top of the line.

Deep red-brown. Nose of chocolate and dark toffee. Flavor has lots of chocolate/cocoa backed up with a molasses sweetness. Finishes nutty and very dry, sucks the sweetness off the tongue. Incredibly rich palate, coats the mouth wonderfully and lingers a long time. Quite nice.

Really liked this one! Dark brown with a big roasted nose. Full creamy body. Sweetness is perfectly balanced. Roasted malt flavors with some chocolate and just enough bitterness to keep the sweet in check. Smooth and drinkable!

Pours a dark murky brown with a thick, dark, cream-colored head. Aroma is full of sweet caramel malt, a touch of tartness, and a smooth German lager yeast profile. Body starts full, thick and sweet hinting at acidity, but turning smoother, sticky and very malty with a touch of bitterness. Finishes with some dark chocolate, floral hints of hops, and hides its alcohol quite well. Definitely a malty brew with some adherance to style, but it doesn’t quite have the authentic flavor it could. Many thanks to both boto and SpringsLicker for the bottles of this fine brew!

500ml - Courtesy of TheBeerSommelier. Thanks for the bottle, Matt! Dense brownish red, creamy light tan head. Cherry toast and warm caramel bread aromas ride soft waves of molasses and brown sugar. Toasty sugared grapes and dark roasted figgy prune-like flavors balance well on a soft hop undertone. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying malty finish. A very well done representation of the style...

Bottle from a Growler. Big beer here, thanks TAR. Very dark color almost stout like, very dark brown colored,o’so slight brown head rims the glass. Aroma is malty, carmel, sweet, maple, and slightly burnt. Sweet flavor. Mix of sweetness and noble hops bitterness on the finish. Excellent beer.
