Commercial Description:
This traditional American ale blends copious amounts of five different malts and various English and American hops to yield a rich and flavorful brew. As this ale is extremely complex in its flavor and quite full-bodied, the consumer is rewarded by letting a small amount warm in a brandy snifter and sipping it as one would a fine sherry. We age our Barleywine for one month in oak bourbon casks to add some vanilla and smoky notes and blend these flavors into a full-blown sensory experience to enjoy on a cold winter's eve.

Pours dark brown with hints of caramel color and a beige head from a cool cobalt blue bottle with a flip top. Initial smells are raisins, plums, and prunes. Wow, the taste reveals some serious hops, this one is young and I could definitely see cellaring this one to let the malts come out a bit more. Other flavors are a roastiness, a hint of bourbon and alcohol, not overpowering, but just the right amount, well balanced. Medium bodied with mellowed carbonation. Enjoyable, I look forward to seeing what a little age does to this one.

500ml 2006 bottle. pours murky brown with very thin tan head. nose has lots of vanilla, some smoke and wood, alcohol, slight vegetable, subtle chocolate and caramel. all aroma notes are subdued but messy. flavor has lots of vanilla, sweet alcohol, raisins, charred oak, subtle bourbon, brown sugar, and caramel. really a mess of flavors. alcohol is noticed with slight burn. a disappointing drain pour. i recall the 2005 to be much better than this. what happened?

Very lazy, slow build-up of the grey-cream coloured head. Dry, woody, tannine-rich; bit of resins/hoppy. Spicey, not unlike but not the same as cardemom; dry, flaked bitter chocolate. Very bitter, outspoken dark full cacao-chocolate character, a bit to the detriment of anything else. Sharp, everlasting bitterness, metallic. Not the best kind of hops, IMO. Full bodied, but not really rich as one expects from a Barley Wine. Sharp bitterness keeps going on. I’m not totally convinced. This is another on that goes over the top, with a metallic hop onslaught and a lack of fullness & alcohol not really apt for a BW. Some fusels would help...

Pours a dark clear brown with a semi white head. Has hints of grapes and other fruits, along with caramel, and wood taste. Finishes sweet and sugary on the tongue. Thanks to Dragonstout.

Dark and cloudy brown in color with a thin beige head. Dark, malty aroma. Lightly spicy malt flavor, maybe hints of pepper and smoke. Lightly bitersweet finish. Tasty.

Bottle (blue! - 500ml, swing-top). Shared with a few guys, courtesy of "R". Unknown vintage. Poured murky brown with a large creamy tan head. Dry, somewhat papery mild roast aroma, moderate alcohol, plenty of celery-like herbal hops. Solid if unremarkable boozy/bitter taste, citrus hops and weak sweet malt backbone. Dry, astringent and decently alcoholic mouthfeel, a little sticky and thin, lingering astringency. Interesting - glad to have shared it!
