Commercial Description:
This traditional American ale blends copious amounts of five different malts and various English and American hops to yield a rich and flavorful brew. As this ale is extremely complex in its flavor and quite full-bodied, the consumer is rewarded by letting a small amount warm in a brandy snifter and sipping it as one would a fine sherry. We age our Barleywine for one month in oak bourbon casks to add some vanilla and smoky notes and blend these flavors into a full-blown sensory experience to enjoy on a cold winter's eve.

Bottle (blue! - 500ml, swing-top). Shared with a few guys, courtesy of "R". Unknown vintage. Poured murky brown with a large creamy tan head. Dry, somewhat papery mild roast aroma, moderate alcohol, plenty of celery-like herbal hops. Solid if unremarkable boozy/bitter taste, citrus hops and weak sweet malt backbone. Dry, astringent and decently alcoholic mouthfeel, a little sticky and thin, lingering astringency. Interesting - glad to have shared it!

The aroma is decent, but no as impressive as I thought. It had a fruity smell. I like the color, due to the fact that I have had a ruby colored barley wine before. This color is a nice change to have. I was impressed with the fruity before taste, but the aftertaste was too bitter. I say this about all of the barley wines. Decent beer, but nothing that I would drink more than once. The beer is smooth with a strong kick for an aftertaste.

dark brown, thick, syrupy pour. no head. aroma of vanilla dark fruit. flavor is very hoppy with notes of vanilla. dry finish. medium bodied. i enjoyed this....the big maltiness cuts the sharp hop addition enough to make it smooth.

Disappointing brew, was expecting a nice barleywine like the prior year, and ended up with a Saison tasting beer. It was difficult to drink as the sourness overwhelmed any and all of the other flavors. This years brew was not a winner!

Dark brown color, with no head. Malty flavor, full body, oily feel, flat, medium bitterness; caramel, coffee, and vanilla flavors. A good sipping beer.

2006 bottle. Very dark brown for a barleywine, slightly cloudy/merky, no head at all (damn you swing top bottles!). Dark fruit, aspririn, slight alcohol, and a surprising amount of roast. Very low carbonation and a weird smooth mouthfeel. The dark roast is out of place, slightly piney/floral hops hanging on, a little weird tasting, slightly minty finish. Coffee astringency? Not sure what’s up with this bottle as my rating matches no one else here...

At cbus 6. Poured a dark brown color with an off white head. Aroma is very malty and rich. Flavor in this was very good. Pretty good mouthfeel and some alcohol.

Poured a brownish red color with a thin, tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malts, vanilla, light bourbon, dried fruits (prune / raisin), and caramel as well. Taste of dark fruits, light roasted malts, smoke, some cocoa, citrus, and bitter hops, with a fair amount of fusel alcohol.
