Ruddy brown pour with small beige head. Malty alcoholic aroma. I detect some butterscotch, and maybe a hint of smoke in the nose as well. Smells pretty good. Start is malty, slightly alcoholic, slightly smokey. The middle finish is dominated by hops and an alcoholic burn. A heavy dose of bitter hops to finish makes this a little undesirable to me. Still, a worthy respresentative.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 27, 2007 Poured from a very cool blue swingtop bottle into my Duvel chalice.
Beer pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. There is absolutely no head to speak of.
Smell is mostly malts. The barrel aging helps smooth out the flavor and cover up the hops. I prefer my barleywine’s to be not very hoppy. The barrel aging is perfect in this barleywine.
Taste is really good. You can really get the barrel aging in the taste. There is an oak characteristic coming through that is very enjoyable. There is still some subtle hops shining through. Very well balanced in my opinion.
Mouthfeel is huge and creamy smooth. The alcohol is very well hidden and can only be felt not tasted.
This is a very good barleywine that I hope I get to revisit in the future. ThomasE (5178), Copenhagen, Denmark
