Commercial Description:
This traditional American ale blends copious amounts of five different malts and various English and American hops to yield a rich and flavorful brew. As this ale is extremely complex in its flavor and quite full-bodied, the consumer is rewarded by letting a small amount warm in a brandy snifter and sipping it as one would a fine sherry. We age our Barleywine for one month in oak bourbon casks to add some vanilla and smoky notes and blend these flavors into a full-blown sensory experience to enjoy on a cold winter's eve.

2006 bottle shared by Dave. The beer pours to deep hazy brown body with a creamy light beige head. The aroma is simple malts, vanilla, light bourbon, oat dust. The flavor is oat dust, chocolate, lingering sweetness, caramel, woodsy malt, Cracklin’ Oat Bran. Trying to be an Old Ale, but has the sweetness of a Barleywine. The palate is sweet and medium bodied.

2006 Bottle. Very dark brown hazy body, thin tan head. Smoky cedar wood over toasty wafer chocolate aroma. Roasted patent, bourbony caramel and vanilla in the flavor. Roasty and dry for a barley wine but the sweet caramel and bouron come through to hold up the flavor. Alcohol and green stem in the belch. Nice stuff, a good variation from the norm.

Wow, deep, molasses color with no head. I thought my beer was bad at first but it tastes so good. Not as overly malted as some barleywines. Good balance between hops and malt. Smells of plum. Tastes of vanilla and caramel. Very nice.

2005, 500ml swingtop bottle. Cloudy dark brown color with a small tan head. Mild bourbon aroma with some tropical fruits, vanilla and toffee. Very sweet caramel malt flavor with a mild bourbon background, some vanilla and bitter hops on the finish. A bit of wet cardboard in the aftertaste and very low carbonation makes this beer become somewhat cloying.

Bottle from ClarkVV Thanks Clark. Nice and malty but the aging proces brings out a little oaken vanillla,a very nice touch. A fine balance between th hops, malts and aging. I have one more in the cellar for 2010 or so.

Dense Dark Chestnut coloring with a thin tan head. Smokey malty nose fairly intense. Hoppy oaky bitterness rounded with a touch of sherry. Vanilla malt on the sweet spots. Refreshingly different then Barley wines I have had that are fairly sweet and strong. This has similarities to Moylan’s Barleywine and also Brown Shugga by Rogue. However it’s signature which neither encompass is the bourbon flavoring.

Murky, dark brown appearance with little to no head. Taste is sweet, a little strong on the alcohol. Some undertones of vanilla from the bourbon aging. Fairly strong malt presence with little hops present. Overall, interesting and different from most barleywines I drink. However, I do like some more hops like in most west coast barleywines. Also found that this grew on me as I drank it, but I’m not sure if I’d pick this one up again.
