Commercial Description:
This traditional American ale blends copious amounts of five different malts and various English and American hops to yield a rich and flavorful brew. As this ale is extremely complex in its flavor and quite full-bodied, the consumer is rewarded by letting a small amount warm in a brandy snifter and sipping it as one would a fine sherry. We age our Barleywine for one month in oak bourbon casks to add some vanilla and smoky notes and blend these flavors into a full-blown sensory experience to enjoy on a cold winter's eve.

No head, dark copper. Aroma is toffee, rich malts, alcohol. Flavor of caramel, sugar, subdued alcohol. Too sweet, minimal hops make this beer one diminsional and overly based on malt. Other than that, well made stuff.

jjpm74 sent out this neat brew. Pours out a clean dark brown color. Huge malts, caramel, and nut, with a nice vanilla kick to it. I like the vanilla in this beer, it gives it a very distinct taste. Quite enjoyable.

Bottle: Courtesy of jjpm74 via trade. Aroma of grapes, caramel, and light alcohol. However, the aroma is not incredibley strong. Pours a dark brown with no transparency. Small large bubbled head. All malt up front with caramel and banana bread. Great grapefruit hop finish which balances all the malt up front. Hops linger into the aftertaste for a little while. I like hoppy, but balanced, barley wines and this fits the profile. Very nice.

Nice, rich beer, sweet aftertaste, but not sticky at all. Warming, a bit bitter too, very nice, Vanilla and hops, go great together! Thanks to jjpm for this gem!

Bottle: Viscous pour, dark brown, some caramel/ruby hues, moderate to large foamy sand colored head, attractive lacing.   Slight alcoholic nose, otherwise citrus peel, some caramel, malty/bready sweetness, with a nice hop flair.   Lots going on here.   Huge assertive pine factor in this one... dominates over all else.   This beer can be summed up as Alaskan Imperial Winter Ale with the huge spruce tip like flavor.   Everything from the aroma is secondary, if at all.   Thought it would be thicker based on the pour.   Aroma does not translate to the taste.   While moderate, body and mouthfeel are much thinner than expected from the pour.   Lots of pine on the finish... not terribly big.   Not bad, but not sweet or malty enough for the style.   This literally reminds me of a bigger version of the Alaskan Winter Ale.   Thanks John!

500 ml swing top bottle 2005. Pours much darker than most barleywines. A ver deep brown with amber highlights and a thin deep beige head. Lots of malt to back the high hopping rates. Some harsh piney hops in the aroma balanced by some toasted malts, toffee aromas and crystal malts. Flavor is initially sweet with lots of big malts but finished moderately bitter. Big mouthfeel and a smooth finish.
